Really cool hats got their heads handed to them.
The men with the really cool hats were the leaders of Argentina. The person that metaphorically handed them their hats was Margaret Thatcher, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
The Atlantic reports that on this day "In 1982, Argentinian junta leader General Leopoldo Galtieri sent 600 troops to take the [Falkland] islands, which then had a population of 1,800 people. The British government was surprised by the attack, but quickly organized a task force and sailed south to retake the territory. A brief but bloody series of battles took place at sea, in the air, and on the ground, ending with a British victory on June 14."
The current Prez of Argentina, Cristina Fernandez, has been ratcheting up pressure on Britain to engage in new talks over what her countrymen call the Malvinas. The fact that oil, Texas tea, black gold, has been found in the waters around The Falklands, lots and lots and lots of oil, has only made the resolve of the Islanders and the Brits more sincere.
