5475...Sit Stand Live Longer

Got this from Boing Boing via the great Russell Barth:

In 2002, over 2000 people between the ages of 51 and 80 were asked to sit on the floor using as little hand- or knee-support as possible. They were then asked to stand up without resorting to using their hands or knees if they were able. The results were recorded. By the end of October 2011, 159 subjects had died. It turns out that most of the people who died were the ones who needed the most support while performing the task. Only 2 of the 159 people who died had been able to sit down and stand up unsupported: "These differences persisted when results were controlled for age, gender and body mass index, suggesting that the sitting-rising test score is a significant predictor of all-cause mortality."

Damn right you are going to try it right now.

Diets, as you will discover January 2nd, are tough to keep.  A fast or a cleanse, exponentially more difficult.  And a nationally publicized hunger strike has to be infinitely harder than the first two situations referenced in this paragraph.

The first line of the story about her in today's Globe and Mail caught my attention.  "Native leader Theresa Spence is showing signs of compromise, dropping her bottom-line demand for a face-to-face meeting with the Prime Minister before she ends her hunger strike."

She may not be at crunch time yet but she will hit that point a lot sooner than later.  She has to be scared.  And looking for a way out.

5455...Justin Trudeau Gave His Talk Last Night

It was a speech at the Reviving The Islamic Spirit Convention in T-dot.

My Facebook friend and old school journo Ray Heard decried the event for a number of reasons, not the least being the segregation, Mr. Heard calls it gender apartheid, of the men and women.

My Facebook and real world friend Julien Feldman posted this:

Julien Feldman The speech shows that JT's plan is essentially an effort to revive the Laurier strategy, displacing Harper's conservative appeal to immigrant Canadians with a more moderate appeal. That's how he displaced Sir John A., but more importantly, that's how Paul Martin sought to win and and hold power. That also explains JT's continuing drift to the right.

We use algorithms to select the most relevant results for a given query. If you're looking for adult content, you can find it without having to change the default setting — you just may need to be more explicit in your query if your search terms are potentially ambiguous. The image search settings now work the same way as in Web search."

Why do you think Mr. Trudeau is slipping Mr. Grenier?  "Both of those [polls] were conducted before the recent spate of gaffes by the leadership candidate, suggesting the incidents may have put a dent in Trudeau's appeal."

5410...Handyman Kidnapped; Forced To Repair Stf

Look you canna make this up.

All I can do is cut and paste from The Toronto Star.

Handyman kidnapped by couple; forced to fix dishwasher, other appliances before escaping: Police

Published on Thursday December 06, 2012

AP PHOTO/SANTA CLARA COUNTY SHERIFFChanelle Troedson, 33, and Jason DeJesus, 36, were charged with false imprisonment and other felony counts Thursday, three days after they were arrested in the attack on the 50-year-old handyman, Santa Clara County authorities said.

MORGAN HILL, CALIF.—A Northern California man and woman are accused of luring a handyman to a home, beating him and holding him against his will for about six hours while they forced him to fix a dishwasher and other appliances under threat of his life.
Jason DeJesus, 36, and Chanelle Troedson, 33, were charged with false imprisonment and other felony counts Thursday, three days after they were arrested in the attack on the 50-year-old handyman, Santa Clara County authorities said.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Jose Cardoza told The Associated Press the attack followed a dispute between the handyman and a relative of DeJesus’ over payment for work he’d done at the relative’s house about two months ago.
The suspects lured the handyman to the home in the San Francisco Bay area city of Morgan Hill on Monday morning on the promise of receiving the money he was owed, as well as doing other work. Instead, the handyman was immediately assaulted, Cardoza said.
“He was in fear, just scared within seconds of walking in the house,” the sheriff’s sergeant said.
The suspects threatened and repeatedly punched the handyman, and made him repair appliances over the next roughly six hours, according to Cardoza. They then forced him into his truck, telling him they were taking him to the relative’s home to complete the work he’d done there.
The handyman managed to escape and call authorities when the suspects stopped for gas in San Jose.
He had visible injuries but declined to be taken to a hospital, Cardoza said. The man’s name wasn’t released.
DeJesus and Troedson also were charged with kidnapping during a carjacking, kidnapping to commit robbery, battery and assault.
They were expected to be arraigned Thursday afternoon. It wasn’t immediately clear if either suspect had an attorney.

Brazeau, Duffy, El Roundo to pick three.

It seems to this writer that the Stephen Harpers just let them, the scandals, layer themselves and we, the people and they, the media, get lost in the weeds.

The downtown Senators not the Kanata Senators.

The Ottawa Citizen reports that the poor men and women of the Conservative caucus of the Canuck Senate have such a hard time getting by on 130 k a year plus expenses that they have to moonlight.

Specifically Tory Senators Jacques Demers, Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin will appear at your Christmas party, Bar Mitzvah or envelope opening for a fee of around 10,000.00 Canuck Bucks.

5406...Aussie PM Says World Ending Dec 21/12

It is a country made up of people of Irish ancestry and, frankly, the Irish are not the brightest bulbs on the tree.

Here is what the Aussie PM shared on YouTube recently.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard took to YouTube last night to make a startling announcement: The made-up Mayan prophecies were right all along, and the world will be ending on December 21st as predicted.
Of course, no one in the scientific or intelligence community was able to confirm that the end was truly nigh, but PM Gillard says she has put her trust in the foresight of a local radio station's breakfast show.
"Whether the final blow comes from flesh eating zombies, demonic hell beasts or from the total triumph of K-pop, if you know one thing about me it is this: I will always fight for you to the very end," Gillard says in the PSA, which would no doubt assuage the fears of Australians, if it weren't being delivered by someone who puts their trust in the foresight of a local radio station's breakfast show.
In all seriousness, it's refreshing to see a head of state with such a great sense of humor. Unless of course Gillard isn't kidding, which is entirely possible.

Perfect, the one year I have my Christmas shopping done early the world ends.

As if cheap beer, touching strippers and non-enforcement of traffic laws was not enough.

Turns out, according the chart that I grabbed off of todays Toronto Sun, La Belle has the cheapest high quality pot in Canada and the world, providing your world is the countries listed.

What is weird about the chart is the fact that in many provinces the lower quality pot costs more than primo.

Perhaps Russell Barth can explain.

5399...This Man Is Going To Die

Ray Heard linked me to this on Facebook.  I am aware that many, most even, think this photo is cheap. I think this picture is going to win the Pulitzer.  It is amazing.  Imagine what the driver is thinking.  And the victim.

mediabistro.com says that "The picture was captured by freelance photographer R. Umar Abbasi, as he happened to see 58-year-old Queens resident Ki Suk Hanbe pushed onto the Q train tracks at the 49th street station. Suk Han was hit by the train, and later pronounced dead at the hospital. His attacker is still on the run from cops."

5398...Bob Rae Man Of The People

Our leader has been the most open of all Parliamentarians to the press in scrums on the Hill.

The Ottawa Citizen's Glen McGregor pulled out his calculator and figured out that Bob Rae has said 89,000 words to the press in 2012.  The wrong man in the right place, Thomas Mulcair, clocks in at 39K.

In keeping with the STFU policies of the ruling Stephen Harpers their number one talker, Tony Clement uttered a mere 6,284 words.

5394...Another Tory Crook

The Senator in charge of buffet and open bar inspection, Mike Duffy, has been revealed by Glen McGregor of The Ottawa Citizen as the latest Tory thief.

Senator Duffy of course had a long running TV show called Mike Duffy Live where he kissed everyone Blue and Red's rear ends in his long quest for a Cash For Life position.  A few years ago our beloved Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, caved in to Mr. Duffy's incessant lobbying and made him a Senator from PEI.  For your erudition previous to lobbying PM Harper our fair weather fatso also lobbied PM Martin, PM Chretien and probably PM Sir John A Parkway.

Here is what the unesteemed Senator, a man who has lived in Ottawa longer than even the WFDS, is doing.  He is claiming his residence in PEI, a humble cottage, as his primary home and claiming the pile of bricks he has owned since 2003 in Kanata, a boring suburb 40 minutes west of Parliament Hill, as his got to have one Ottawa residence.

This old fashioned switcheroo has been going on "Since September 2010."  Since then "Duffy has charged the Senate $33,413 for living expenses in the National Capital Region."  Rules are clear that "Senators with a primary residence within 100 kilometres of the city are not eligible for the allowance." Kanata and back is less than half of that mileage.

The former journalistic hack and unelected Senator told The Ottawa Citizen that he was "...frankly tired of your B.S."

As witty as he is urbane.
