4441...CBC Radio Selling Ads

Private broadcasters in our Canada have their panties in a knot this morning.

Pour quoi?

The quoi is that the CBC, who got rocked for a hundred plus million in the budget, have decided to make up that piece of change by selling ads on CBC2 and Espace Musique, the french version of 2.

The horror.

"'If approved it would obviously change the dynamic in the marketplace, and take away part of the distinctiveness [Radio 2 and Espace Musique have] provided to Canadian listeners,' said Pierre-Louis Smith, an industry consultant and former chief regulatory officer with the Canadian Association of Broadcasters.

'It would be one new player that would be chasing advertising dollars. I’m pretty sure it would be detrimental for for-profit broadcasters.'"

STFU.

So zero sum you are Mr. Smith. Ditto the oligarchs that dominate private broadcasting. You have a radio, you are aware that there are three private companies that dominate radio in Canada.

Fact is the CBC owes it to its owners, you and I, to be competitive and to not be a money pit. Selling ads will do that, not just for Radio 2 but also for its Radio One franchise which is, according to the Globe and Mail article I am drawing from, "...is one of the two top-rated stations in each of Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver and Ottawa, and in the top five in both English and French in Montreal."

There are some serious dollars to be made here.
