5826...Johnny Esaw Has Passed

If you are a certain age, and I am, this name means a lot.

He was the face of CTV Sports for decades and he has just died at the age of 87.



He was a prairie boy who came to Toronto to become the first sports guy on CFTO in 1960.  CFTO is now CTV Toronto and their website reports that "Esaw is widely credited with helping figure skating become a mainstream sport. In 1961 he had a small ice rink built in the CTV parking lot and had one of Canada’s top figure skating pairs teams come in for a demonstration for network executives. He believed that if he could get figure skating on TV, Canadians would watch."

He was right.
