1515...Jack Layton, Boy Mayor

Chris Selley, National Post posits in today's newspaper that now may be the time for New Democratic Party leader Jack "Call Me Jack" Layton to make a move back to his hometown of Tronna and run the show.

Mr. Selley rightfully points out that there is no way in hell that Mr. Layton will ever be Prime Minister of our great land and that, although his work as the leader of the Dips has been impressive, "Took over party that won 13 seats and 8.5% of the popular vote in the 2000 election, built it to 37 seats and more than 18% in 2008. Able to extract progressive concessions from evil non-progressive governments at their most desperate moments. Nearly landed a Cabinet post in 2008 in a coalition government." they have hit a ceiling/wall/whatever.

Mr. Selley also writes that he thinks that Mr. Layton would be a disaster as mayor of the Big Smoke [he prefers John Tory] but the scribe believes that Mr. Layton has a really good shot at it and that the appeal of actually running something must have some sort of cache.

  1. All Layton has done for our political landscape has been to split the left by attacking the Liberals at every opportunity. Sure he has increased the popularity and the number of seats they hold, however at what cost? Jack Layton played an instrumental role in Paul Martins last budget, and then proceeded to stab the Liberals in the back, and we have been living with the results of that betrayal ever since in the form of the Steven Harper Conservatives. Mr. Layton still at every turn attacks the Liberals to continue to chisel that middle ground vote away from them. This whole chiselling effect only strengthen Harper and his quest for a majority. Liberals need to get back that middle ground vote from the dippers in order to benefit Canada and over throw its current dictator. There is a good goal for 2010!
