Formal cermonies were held in Ottawa right down the street from Parliament at the War Memorial. This year's Silver Cross mother is Della Marie Morley, whose son, Corporal Keith Morley, was killed in Afghanistan in 2006 in a suicide bombing. Although she says she is proud to be honoured in such fashion I am certain that she would rather be home with her son than being with Prince Charles, Camilla, Govenor General Michaƫlle Jean and the Prime Minister. War does suck and the price Corporal Morley and thousands upon thousands of Canadians have paid is truly touching.
CBC.ca lists the sacrifices in this manner:
More than 100,000 Canadians soldiers have died in various conflicts since 1899, including: More than 240 in the Boer War. More than 66,000 in the First World War. More than 44,000 in the Second World War. 516 in the Korean War. 121 in peacekeeping missions. 133 in Afghanistan. More than 600,000 Canadian soldiers volunteered to go overseas for the Great War. In addition to those who died, 172,000 were wounded.
That is why today is Remembrance Day. Try to take a moment and do so.
