1849...Problems In Porn Land

Being someone who grew up tight to the Quebec border with access to french TV porn has been omnipresent in my life [the lunch time dilemma as a child was whether to watch The Flintstones on CJOH or porn on one of the french channels; The Flintstones usually won coz with porn once you have seen two you have seen them all] but for those of you that grew up in cultural backwaters like Toronto or Regina or Victoria I know it holds a special place in your heart.

Therefore it is with a heavy heart that I have to tell you that the USA Today reported earlier this week that "The adult-entertainment industry is in a tailspin, shattering the notion that it is one of the few recession-proof industries."

What is killing the industry is not the lack of love for sex on the screen. No, what is killing it is the explosion of free tube sites that many of us, moi aussi, use to access programming such as Friday Night Lights, current films and porn. These sites are driven by banner adverts and pay no royalties so, in essence, porn has turned into f*cking for free as opposed to f*cking for money.

" 'We're dealing with the perfect storm: declining DVD sales, rampant piracy, free content and a weak economy,' " says Steven Hirsch, founder of porn heavyweight Vivid Entertainment. He says its DVD sales plunged 20% last year. " 'This is the worst I've seen in this industry in 25 years. ' "

The downside is if the porn industry goes broke then there won't be anyone making new material. Without new material you'll have to view the old material over and over.

It'll be just like being married.
