1895...The Natives Are Restless

Barbara Jaffe in the Vancouver Sun writes about social unrest in Aboriginal circles in what used to be Their Home And Native Land. She references Douglas Bland, a former lieutenant-colonel in Canada's Armed Forces, who told an audience in Winnipeg last week that conditions are ripe for a major uprising among First Nations people.

Most are under 25, over half, under educated, less than one in four finish high school and a disportionate amount of their youth are in jail, jails that are quickly turning into community colleges for disaffected Natives.

Out of 308 MPs only five reflect Metis, Inuit or First Nations ethnicity. Mr. Bland says that the key to avoiding conflict with the Native community is by encouraging education and political efficacy.

Or else.
