No one wants to say it but I will.
Peeps at the First Nations University of Canada are fighting back after the federal government refused to restore funding to the troubled institution. If you have such a great school get the money elsewhere then. Perhaps lobby the Mohawks to give you a piece of the gambling pie or sell pouring rights and naming rights and rights to name your buildings. If you have a good product, no problem. Let the market decide.
The Kingston Whig-Standard tells that the group met with Indian Affairs Minister Chuck Strahl Thursday in a last-ditch attempt to restore the funding, which ends March 31. They say that while the university had governance problems, the institution has implemented all the required changes.
In fact the head of the Canadian Association of University Teachers, James Turk, says his group was the university's biggest critic in the past, but because of the changes made his organization is now pushing for money to keep the school open.
But the man holding the purse, Minister Strahl, says it's not enough.
"The problem is there's a lot more to running a university than changing the governance and saying everything is all fixed. It may be better, I hope it's better, I wish it's better, but we're not going to restore the funding."
And if it is all fixed getting private money from the Native community and non natives who feel this in terrible should not be so hard.
Right?
