L. Ian MacDonald of the Montreal Gazette weighs in this morning with his opinion on the Governor General styling herself as head of state when, apparently, she isn't except that she is sort of.
He writes that "All that being said, the PM's office is quite right to insist that she is not the head of state, but the queen's representative."
Let me, for the record, for what it is worth, indicate that we could solve this problem once and for all by jettisoning the GG, the Queen, the future King et. al.
To placate the Monarchist League of Canada I think we should have a lotto with all Canadians names put in the hopper, we have a draw between the second and third period of the NHL All Star game and the winner becomes King or Queen of Canada and his/her heirs will succeed him/her.
Sure, it is random, but no more random than the House of Windsor.
Another problem solved.

ReplyDeleteAustralia is trying to do that. I expect something like this to be proposed in Canada sometime in the next couple of years.
