891...How To Watch Football

Nine 63 inch TVs.

One movie screen size TV.

John Madden is being interviewed by Bob Costa's on the halftime show of the Cowboys/Giants game on NBC and has just revealed that that is how he now watches football on Sundays.

That rocks.

Hard.

866...Jay Leno Has A New Show

"Cut rate snooze inducing third rate bore" is what the USA Today had to say about the new Jay Leno Show on NBC, a program that is, sorry, was to redefine how over the air TV networks were going to program and generate revenues.

Quoting Appleton, Wisconsin's WVBO's Rich Allen, the program has been entirely revamped from the late night Tonight Show that Mr. Leno hosted for almost two decades.

They got rid of the desk.

John Doyle in the Globe and Mail this morning also savaged the program. Mr. Doyle says the 17.7 million viewers that Mr. Leno got opening night will not be replicated. That was the nicest thing Mr. Doyle had to say about the show.

856...More Reasons Why No Election

Polls released around supper time on Monday show the Tories up 9 on the Liberals and the NDP sinking like a lifeboat full of rejects from NBC's The Biggest Loser. Jack Layton's gang is at their lowest level in years, a mere 12 per cent in comparison to the Tories at 39 and the Liberals at 30. In fact the Dips are within the margin of error of the Green Party who are parked at 8. Imagine the horror in the corridors of non power at NDP HQ if the Greens ever get a leader who has a clue.

The Ipsos-Reid poll reported by Andrew Mayeda of Canwest News Service indicates that anti-election sentiment is running especially high at the moment with 71 per cent of us not wanting to go through yet another election.

Fingers crossed.

848...Why Can't We Be Friends?

For the good of the country.

I thought about this last night when I was watching the NFL on NBC. During the game there was an advert for the Monday night games on ESPN, an ABC property. ABC and NBC have been long time competitors but, for the good of the NFL, they cross promote during their games.

Wouldn't it be nice if Michael and Stephen and Jack could be friends? For the good of the country.

712...Britney Spears Update V. 2.

Dateline NBCMiami.com.

Pink-Clad Pooch Stolen from Gay Bar by Man With Britney Tattoo

I only wish I could make something like that up.

Brian Hamacher writes that Hudson Hayward Hemingway, that is the pink clad pooch, was allegedly stolen from Brian Dortort at Georgie's Alibi, a gay bar in South Florida.

Mr. Dortort says that he let a man with a Britney Spears tattoo on either his neck or arm hold the 4-month-old Chihuahua. Neck OR arm. Thanks for narrowing that down.

Hudson Hayward Hemingway is about the size of a softball, light-cream colored with a pink belly, pink ears and pink earrings.

Earrings.

On a dog.

A dog named Hudson Hayward Hemingway.

My guess, the dog just booked Mr. Dortort, just booked baby.

Clay Aiken was not available for comment.

506...And He Wanted To Be President

John McCain that is.

I caught this on on NBC's Meet the Press Sunday morning; Senator McCain expressed his surprise at Sarah Palin's unexpected announcement that she would be leaving her job as Alaska's governor. The Arizona Senator said he was not shocked by the move but he also does not believe his former vice presidential running mate actually quit, in spite of her resignation. "I don't think she quit," he said. "I think she changed her priorities."

Confused?

Of course you are.

461...Senator Al Franken Not Funny

So say the reports out of Washington, District of Columbia, where the junior Senator from Minnesota finally made it to the inner circle after a prolonged recount.

Uh, didn't you all see him on Saturday Night Live?

Funny, he never was.

453...Tom Green Beaten

Badly.

Ottawa area comedian Tom Green, who is now living in Southern California, is reportedly in serious condition at Golden State Regional Hospital after a minor car accident yesterday that turned into an attack. Transworldnews.com is reporting that Mr. Green was allegedly driving a Mercedes in Fullerton, California when his vehicle struck a pickup truck towing landscaping equipment. Three men from the pickup truck pulled Green from his car and beat him before fleeing the scene.

“He didn’t have a chance against these men who attacked him before he said a single word to them,” says a witness.

Mr. Green, 37, was unresponsive when paramedics arrived. No other details on the alleged incident were available. You may remember him from Rogers TV in Ottawa. He was a big deal on MTV in the latter part of the 20th century, his star has lost his lustre recently but he has continued work and has stayed in the public eye. His last big job was competing on the Donald Trump/NBC show Celebrity Apprentice earlier this year. He currently hosts the Internet talk show Tom Green’s House Tonight and the Planet Green game show Go for the Green.

313...Gary Bettman Doesn't Need Viagra

Coz the 2009 Stanley Cup playoffs provided him with enough to keep him going for a long, long, long time.

Not just the fact that it was a superb seven game series between Pitts and Detroit, no, it was the fact that last Friday's game seven drew 3.529 million viewers on average during the entire game on CBC and around 8 million on NBC.

That was the biggest audience since 1973; were you alive in '73?

The fact that the NHL is equal to its numbers from 36 years ago should make Commissioner Bettman very happy.

The fact that the NHL is equal to its numbers from 36 years ago should make Commissioner Bettman very concerned.

It is a sword that cuts both ways.

304...Do You Know Who Heidi and Spencer Are?

Me neither.

They are sort of on the current NBC TV show "Get Me Out Of Here, I'm A Celebrity".

They used to be on a show on one of those music channels that don't play music anymore.

May be they still are.

Anyhow, Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt were on Today yesterday morning and were upset with the way Al Roker treated them. He is the weatherman by the way, and Today is not exactly Meet The Press.

The headline in EW.com says it best:

Heidi Pratt [sic] says Al Roker 'attacked' her: In other news, Heidi Pratt loves fame.

They were all over Larry King Live tonight on CNN and Ryan Seacrest's KIIS FM, Los Angeles, radio show crying the blues.

From Today and YouTube here is the interview:

276...More On Hockey

Could you ask for more?

It comes down to this, game 7, Stanley Cup Finals in the city that bills itself as Hockeytown, Detroit.

It is the Windsor Red Wings, favourites, against the Sidney Crosby Pittsburgh Penguins.

8 o'clock tonite, CBC's Hockey Night In Canada if you are a true hockey fan and NBC's coverage for the more casual fan.

I will explain my reasoning re CBC/NBC. The NBC broadcast offers more background on the teams, players and leagues; CBC, which caters to those of us in The Great White North, assumes that you know the game.

Different styles, both excellent broadcasts.

252...My Name Is Earl Canned/Renewed/Canned

In or out.

My Name Is Earl, the erstwhile NBC situation comedy that garnered five Emmy's in its four year run, was cancelled last week by NBC and sorta, kinda, may be picked up by cable network TBS.

TBS, the Turner Broadcasting System, is now backing off a bit saying that the show may be too expensive for them.

Reason I mention this is that Jason Lee, who plays Earl, has the best moustache on TV and a TV schedule without a great moustache [reference Magnum PI, Jim Van Horne from TSN and Rogers Sportsnet, great moustaches from back in the day] hardly makes turning on the TV worth it.

247...Big Opportunity For CBC/HNIC

That's a big opportunity for Hockey Night In Canada. Seems that the American rights holder to the NHL Stanley Cup Final telecasts, NBC, is none too happy with the fact that both the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Detroit Red Wings have been holding viewing parties in and around their respective arenas when their teams are on the road.

Here is a cut and paste from the Detroit News morning edition:

There will be no Joe Vision broadcast of Tuesday night's Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals because NBC would not rescind its exclusive rights to the telecast. The game will not be shown at Pittsburgh's outdoor plaza either. At issue is television ratings, and a large crowd at Joe Louis Arena could be hundreds -- if not thousands -- of television sets not tuned in to NBC. "It is certainly something we wanted to show but were unable to secure the rights," said Steve Violetta, Senior Vice President of Business Affairs for the Wings. NBC representative Brian Walker did not immediately return a phone message for comment, but NHL media relations vice president Frank Brown confirmed the situation while expressing sympathy to Red Wings fans. "We are very much in tune and very sensitive to the great experience that fans have by coming to a great venue and watching a great hockey game," Brown said. "That said we need to be sensitive to the business end of things and that business is ratings driven."
Shortsighted, very, on the part of NBC but this is where CBC could and should step up to the plate, probably won't, but should. The Windsor station, channel 9 CBET, comes in nicely both over the air and on cable in the [former] Motor City so, iffen they wanted to, Joe Vision [referring to the Joe Louis Arena] could still come off.
A bit tricky dicky for certain but it could happen.

236...Tony Awards, Last Night

On CBS. Or may be NBC. Perhaps FOX. Definitely not on ABC coz that is where Kobe was.

You missed it too? Thought so.

When you break it down, the Tony Awards are a throw back to the olden days of TV, like really olden, 1940's, 1950's, when TV, American TV, was a reflection of New York City[and later, Los Angeles] popular culture to those in the hinterlands.

Canadian TV is still in that stage, reflecting, on English TV, Toronto or a Toronto centric view of the Canada, to those in the hinterlands; for French TV substitute Montreal for Toronto.

Breaking out of that construct is key.

125...Michael Steele, Idiot

On NBC's Meet The Press this morning, Michael Steele, who is the chairman of the Republican Party, says that the University of Notre Dame should not award an honorary degree to President Barack Obama.

Mr. Steele says Notre Dame is right to be honoured that Obama is speaking at Sunday's commencement. Then he does a 180 degree turn and says granting Obama an honorary degree is inappropriate because the President is pro abortion while the Roman Catholic Church opposes abortion.

That be crazy.

For starters, President Obama is Pro Choice, not pro abortion. There is a big difference there Chairman Steele. Catholics, and I am one, are not a monolith and many of us, including prominent Catholics like New York's former governor Mario Cuomo and myself, are Pro Choice. Pro Choice does not make one pro abortion; it means one respects the right of a woman to choose.

Mr. Steele also referred to Notre Dame as the nation's largest Catholic university. Uh, no, the South Bend, Indiana school is not even the largest Catholic school in that part of the country. DePaul University, in Chicagoland, is the largest Catholic university. Honest mistake though, Notre Dame has a higher profile, dating back to the days that it was good at football. Which are so over by the way. Charlie Weis, what a schmuck. But that is another story.

Abortion, like a lot of medical procedures, should not be restricted to those who have financial means. When abortion is proscribed it becomes a right of those with privilege and connection; one would have to be naive to think otherwise.

Medical access should not be only for the elites, it should be available for all.

Not just in the United States either; it should be available across the board in Canada also. It is not and that is elitist.
