935...Now On To More Important Things

The party that should be running the show will be introducing a motion today to topple the Tory government today.

The Canadian Press reports that the Liberals will table a non-confidence motion in the Commons today and bring a vote on that Thursday. According to the story I am sourcing this is probably going to fail but at least, unlike, well, not to point fingers but, Jack Layton, hello, at least Mikey I talks the talk and walks the walk.

Gilles Ducppe, the Bloc Quebecois leader, says that he will support the Liberal motion.

This week we find out if the NDPers really are true to their convictions or going to hang with their friends in the Conservative Party. Like they did earlier this month.

The NDP's only Quebec MP Thomas Mulcair said today "...the important thing is to try to keep Parliament working so that we can do things that are in the public interest.'' He failed to mention that if the election is held this fall the NDP will get beaten like a rented mule.

859...Looks Like World Famous Is Right This Time

No election.

That is the way the wind is blowing.

Friday will tell.

856...More Reasons Why No Election

Polls released around supper time on Monday show the Tories up 9 on the Liberals and the NDP sinking like a lifeboat full of rejects from NBC's The Biggest Loser. Jack Layton's gang is at their lowest level in years, a mere 12 per cent in comparison to the Tories at 39 and the Liberals at 30. In fact the Dips are within the margin of error of the Green Party who are parked at 8. Imagine the horror in the corridors of non power at NDP HQ if the Greens ever get a leader who has a clue.

The Ipsos-Reid poll reported by Andrew Mayeda of Canwest News Service indicates that anti-election sentiment is running especially high at the moment with 71 per cent of us not wanting to go through yet another election.

Fingers crossed.

314...Ignatieff Talks Self Off Ledge

Reads the headline in today's National Post.

The complete headline in John Ivision's article this morning is:

Ignatieff talks self off ledge; Liberals in no shape for a summer election

Beauty headline, eh? And as Mr. Ivision goes on to write, the Tories seem more prepared to hit the polls than the Libs, Dips or Le Bloc with 21 times as many candidates registered with Elections Canada than the Liberals. The fact that the Liberal Party is in disarray indicates that when the writ is dropped they will simply impose candidates, without the fuss of nomination battles. The Liberals could simply re-nominate everyone who ran last time; considering the election was less than a year ago this will be relatively facile. In addition to the party's 77 MPs, 18 former Liberal MPs are said to be running or are thinking about it. This of course is a problem for Mikey I. because it is same old same old same old not the new blood that Mr. Ignatieff would surely like to the Liberal fold.

Better later than sooner. In this writer's view the next Prime Minister of Canada would be better served by chilling out and waiting until the fall of 2010 to take out the Conservatives.

308...Phony War

The waiting is the hardest part.

Will they stay, the Members of Parliament, or will they go go?

To have an election or not have an election, that is the question.

303...Michael Ignatieff Sent Me A Letter

The next Prime Minister of Canada, Mikey I., may have sent you one too, but, just in case, I thought I would cut and paste what he sent me.

Dear Dan,
Earlier today I spoke directly to Canadians about the need to replace confrontation with co-operation in the House of Commons and I laid out our party’s response to the Conservative government’s second accountability report.
Unlike the NDP and Bloc – who rejected the report without even reading it – we’ve been a party of government and hope to be so again. So we can’t afford to behave irresponsibly.
After studying the report and consulting with Canadians, we have serious questions about the government’s performance.

Click here to watch Michael’s statement to the press
There are four questions Canadians deserve to have answered:
The government needs to tell Canadians what its plans for employment insurance are – now, not in three months time.
Canadians want the facts on infrastructure: how much money was spent in the critical first 120 days? Not promised or flowing or committed – actually spent.
What plan does the government have to get our finances back under control? Mr. Harper’s past commitment to get us back to balance within 5 years is noticeably absent from the accountability report.
Although it does not figure in the report, the health care crisis is of urgent concern to Canadians. If Chalk River can’t supply the isotopes for needed diagnostic tests, where is the government going to find the alternative supply and what plan has the government put in place to manage the health care crisis in the future?
So where do we go from here? Canadians don’t want an election. I am not seeking an election. But doing our job means standing by our principles – standing up when the government lets Canadians down.
As Liberals, we are prepared to give Mr. Harper the time he needs to answer these questions, extending this sitting of Parliament if it’s necessary to get the work done. The real question is: does Mr. Harper want Parliament to work?
He can make it work this week by responding honestly to the concerns we have raised – by giving Canadians the transparency and accountability they need from their government.
Yours, Michael
He is the man, but, please, Mr. Harper, do what you are supposed to do and run the country rightly not wrongly.
No election, please.

The next Prime Minister of Canada is letting you stay at 24 Sussex if you want to.

Your call.

By the way, Mr. Harper, was that your wife I saw at the liquor store collecting empty boxes?

239...Nova Scotia, The Place To Be

Not only for exciting courtroom drama, courtesy Lisa Raitt and Jasmine MacDonnell, no, there is a wee election happening there this day, Tuesday the 9th of June, and it promises to be an important and historic one.

Even though New Democratic Leader Darrell Dexter would like you to believe that the election is too close to call fact is his party, which trailed Premier Rodney MacDonald by only one seat in the provincial house, is poised to kick some serious butt at the polls, looking to sweep not only their traditional power bases in the HRM [Halifax Regional Municipality] and in Cape Breton, but all through Canada's Ocean Playground. In fact I will goes as far as to guarantee you that come Wednesday morning when Darrell Dexter pulls himself out from underneath the covers he will be the first New Democratic Premier of Nova Scotia.

In fact the only question that remains is who is Paul MacEwan is hoping wins tonight?
