Huntsville, Ontario, the town that was a huge stepping stone in the career of Shania Twain, is going to be on the world stage next June as South Korea and Canada hold the G-20 summit.
Canadian Press has the story that Prime Minister Stephen Harper and South Korean President Myung-bak Lee made the announcement today during the G20 meetings in Steelertown.
Say what you will about Stephen Harper but I think setting this event up for the new Prime Minister, Mikey I, shows a lot of class.
There is also a G-8 summit mixed in at the meetings in late June of 2010.
I don't know why we are co hosting it with the South Koreans but we are and I haven't quite wrapped my head around the difference between G-20 and G-8 but I do know one thing: Huntsville will have more tear gas rounds per capita in late June 2010 and more protesters per capita in late June 2010 and more police per capita in late June 2010 than any other place on the planet.
I am sure that the new Prime Minister, Michael Ignatieff, will hit it out of the park in Huntsville next year.

The biggest consumer of branded products I know, 93.1 CKCU's tic, will be proud of his Prime Minister this day.
Stephen Harper met with Tim Horton's executives today after shareholders of the multinational coffee chain voted to reorganize as a Canadian public company. The Canadian Press reports that the PM says that the reason Timmy's is moving back to our home and native land from the home of the free and the land of the brave is because of the Conservative policies of lower taxes that are attracting business to Canada.

900...Champions Don't Make Excuses; NDPers Do
Steve Wicary in today's Globe and Mail talks about why "..my party cannot, in good conscience, vote down legislation that is a step in the right direction."
By "...my party..." he of course means Jack Layton's party, the NDP, a party that if they drew Canadians into an election would get beaten like a rented mule.
Mr. Wicary writes that "Jack Layton explains himself in the op/ed pages of the Ottawa Citizen. The New Democratic Party, he says, is supporting the Prime Minister's legislation on employment insurance reform - not the government as a whole."
And the fact that they are, when you factor in the margin of error, at less than 10 per cent in the national polls and face probable ruin if an election were held this fall has nothing to do with Mr. Layton's stand.

The Canadian Press reports that in a speech to the Toronto Board of Trade earlier Monday the next Prime Minister of Canada said that upon taking office he would open the books and conduct a full audit of public finances.
Michael Ignatieff said that the Conservatives have made a mess of Canada's economy and that his party will be the one to clean it up.
After four years of Stephen Harper's Conservative reign of error Mr. Ignatieff suggests that we ask the question "Are we better off than we were four years ago?''

This time from a more credible source, Peter Worthington, in the Toronto Sun.
Mr. Worthington postulates that the next Prime Minister of Canada, Michael Ignatieff, may be getting bored with partisan politics and may just be gerrymandering an election so he can get defeated and go back to scribbling books and sipping champagne on the international smart guy circuit.
The emminent Toronto Sun writer goes on to say that he is speculating and that now that both the Bloc Quebecois and NDP seem to have backed off what was sure-fire election agitation a couple of weeks ago, maybe Mr. Ignatieff is now captive of election-mania rather than its instigator. He also makes the important point that since the Tories seem likely to benefit most if there's an election, maybe Stephen Harper will provoke one.
After a few hundred words disparaging partisan politics, Mr. Worthington does point out that Mikey I is an intriguing fellow and that it would be surprising if one as bright at the next PM wasn't distracted a bit by the goings on on the Hill.

Why would Stephen Harper get warm fuzzies over the Opposition? Layton proudly declares he has voted against the Cons 79 times (didn't have to even read the budget to declare the NDP would vote NO!) That's real cooperation, Jack.
As for Ignatieff, he has met with the P.M. 3 times since his coronation in Jan. (twice at the request of the P.M.) His attitude of "he (Harper) knows where to find me" reeks of arrogance. When Harper was in Opposition, he was in constant communication with the P.M. advocating for Canadian people, a high-salaried job that Ignatieff has no clue about as official leader of the opposition. So... 9 months into the year we have heard blustering remarks from Ignatieff about his desire to take down the government no less than 3 times. We are starting to look like a banana republic internationally. The NDP and Liberals equate Harper's "meaness" with not caving in to their expensive demands, other than the budget which was opposition driven. I think the shoe is on the other foot..the Opposition is not cooperating with Harper. If you doubt this check "How'd They Vote" a website which clearly shows the voting records of all M.P.'s. It's an eye-opener!
As for the justice system --WHAT JUSTICE SYSTEM??? Thankfully Harper has initiated a federal agency to support VICTIMS of crime, since they have largely been forgotten by the NDP/Liberals and Bloc.
And NO, the Bloc should have no positions in the outcomes of what happens to the rest of Canada, since their mandate is to separate from it. They represent Quebec--leave it at that. Canadians don't want a nanny state --although lately the groanings indicate we might have to grow up a little. As Kennedy said (paraphrased) "ask what you can do for your country, not what it can do for you."

The New Yorker is a magazine that serves that town and Barbara Jaffe in this morning's Calgary Herald and Vancouver Sun doesn't think that being profiled in said rag benefits the next Prime Minister of Canada.
She posits that being profiled in MacLeans is a good thing, sells Michael Ignatieff at the Tim Horton's and the Legion; being profiled in The New Yorker in an article called "The Return of the Native; A public intellectual remakes himself as a public servant" is not so saleable.
Still, the next PM makes a good point in the story, as reported by Ms. Jaffe, and that is, I am paraphrasing, Canadians don't really care about the intellectual capacity of their leader, their PM, as much as they care about his trustablility and integrity.
Who would you rather have babysit your kids?

Scribblings in the various Sun papers today indicate that the NDP could save the Conservative government from a fall defeat if the Tories make strides to boost pensions, slay bank and credit card fees and help the unemployed.
The national director for Canada's fourth party, Brad Lavigne, was succinct when he said that "The Prime Minister needs to decide if he wants to call an election or call Mr. Layton."
The Dips have 36 seats which is a lot of seats for them and I would think they know that things probably won't get any better but they sure as hell could get a whole lot worse.

The Liberals say they will try to trigger the defeat of Stephen Harper's minority Conservative government at the earliest possible date this fall. Parliament resumes Sept. 14, and the Liberals will have their first opportunity to present a no-confidence motion on Oct. 1. Liberal MP Bob Rae said the party will present the motion "at the first available opportunity."

The former confidant of the United States' greatest Canadian Prime Minister, Brian Mulroney, Mr. MacDonald slags the Liberals and Canada's next Prime Minister, Michael Ignatieff, for being lazy and incompetent.

Andrea Houston of the Peterborough Examiner followed the next Prime Minister of Canada and his loverly wife Zsuzsanna Zsohar as they picked up vittles at the Peterborough Farmer's Market Saturday.
Mr. Ignateiff picked up perogies, meat, veggies and sunflowers to brighten his day and was accompanied by Betsy McGregor former and future Liberal candidate in Peterpatch.

Stephen McDougall in The Record, Sherbrooke, Quebec's English newspaper, writes this morning that at a press conference last week at a community center in Adstock, a hamlet of2,800 just east of Thetford Mines, our beloved Prime Minister Stephen Harper said his government will spend $225 million over three years to help finance high speed Internet upgrade projects. He said the funding would generate jobs and allow rural and remote communities in Canada to have better computer access to more public and private services.
This is all nice, don't get me wrong, but the fact is that high speed is available for people living in the sticks, it just costs more. Their is a price to be paid for living in paradise, eh?
Perhaps, just perhaps, Mr. Harper is using this issue to pander to rural residents and secure their votes and his future.
