961...Ode To Mickey Dee's And tic

A cut and paste job from a New York Times blog that tells us that in the lower 48 states the farthest one can get from the golden arches is less than 150 miles. I would guess that in Canada, if one follows the Trans Canada highway, the number is similar.

McSparseness,’ U.S.A.

Today’s idea: The place in the contiguous United States where you can get farthest away from a McDonald’s is in remote northwestern South Dakota, a visual artist and mapmaker figures.

Stephen Van Worley

Commerce
“To gauge the creep of cookie-cutter commercialism, there’s no better barometer than McDonald’s,” writes Stephen Von Worley [sic], a blogger and visual artist who says he came to this conclusion on seeing golden arches on a dispiriting drive down Interstate 5 in central California.

And so it dawned on him that to locate the antithesis of such strip-mall sameness, it makes sense to find the remotest point from any McDonald’s in the lower 48 states, as the crow flies. And to do that you need to plot the locations of each of the roughly 13,000 of them across the land, as Von Worley does in the illuminating (some would say alarming) map above.
[No matter, I may be World Famous but I ain't Bill Gates, he hee]

As the map suggests, you then need to go west, young crassness detester. Von Worley writes:
For maximum McSparseness, we look westward, towards the deepest, darkest holes in our map: the barren deserts of central Nevada, the arid hills of southeastern Oregon, the rugged wilderness of Idaho’s Salmon River Mountains, and the conspicuous well of blackness on the high plains of northwestern South Dakota. There, in a patch of rolling grassland, loosely hemmed in by Bismarck, Dickinson, Pierre, and the greater Rapid City-Spearfish-Sturgis metropolitan area, we find our answer. Between the tiny Dakotan hamlets of Meadow and Glad Valley lies the McFarthest Spot: 107 miles distant from the nearest McDonald’s, as the crow flies, and 145 miles by car!

Suffer a Big Mac Attack out there, and you’re hurtin’ for certain! [Weather-Sealed]

945...ActionPackedHourOfRadio6To7AM2day

So hit that number before you turn in and then turn me on at six tomorrow/this morning.

I will be talking to a bunch of people tomorrow starting with the contest queen from Oshawa, Carolyn Willman who will be in town this weekend for a seminar that can and will win you valuable prizes.

Later in the hour Russell Barth floats in to tell me about a legalize pot fundraiser being held next week.

Plus maybe the smart and sexy Candace Hanna will be my co pilot; fingers crossed.

Of course tic, the most brand loyal person I know, will come and torment me around 6 30; but I love it. This week I have a present for his tic'ness that will refute his argument that Coke wastes money on advertising. Of course he won't get it but his lack of intellectual dexterity is what makes him so adorable. And then from 7 to 7 30 he will do the whether, including radar and maps and charts. How cool, eh?

Finally, if his schedule will allow, Woody from CHEZ 106 on air at about a quarter to seven to talk about this Saturday's big fundraiser for Breast Cancer at the Elmdale House. For more details check out Post 942.

Me, on the radio, with you, in less than six hours.

911...PM Harper Repatriates Timbit

The biggest consumer of branded products I know, 93.1 CKCU's tic, will be proud of his Prime Minister this day.

Stephen Harper met with Tim Horton's executives today after shareholders of the multinational coffee chain voted to reorganize as a Canadian public company. The Canadian Press reports that the PM says that the reason Timmy's is moving back to our home and native land from the home of the free and the land of the brave is because of the Conservative policies of lower taxes that are attracting business to Canada.

Welcome home.

860...More On The Swine Flu

This morning Matthew Buechler was going to come on the radio, CKCU, with me and explain why the swine flu vaccine was and is wrong, evil, etcetera.

He didn't show.

Perhaps he didn't show because I am notorious, tic has accused me of this several times, I am notorious for using facts. Facts tend to confuse individuals like tic and perhaps Mr. Buechler, who is involved in a 911 revisionist group here in Ottawa, is an anti fact guy. Probably not but you never know.

And I sure don't know about Mr. Buechler; like I stated above, he didn't show this mornin' nor did he email, text or call.

Anyhow, this may warm his heart. Or twist his panties into a big knot.

The Daily Orange, the paper of record on campus at Syracuse University, reports that "Syracuse University Health Services had the highest turnout ever for its free seasonal flu vaccination clinic Friday. Approximately 1,600 students lined up outside Flanagan Gymnasium to receive a vaccination at the first of several clinics planned throughout the fall semester."

I would have liked to ask Mr. Buechler what he thought about that but, alas, he was a no show and I haven't heard a peep from him since.

833...Barnstorm Tomorrow/Party Like It Is 1999

In less than 24 hours I will be in bucolic Finch, Ontario, sipping on a cold one and listening to great music like Ken Workman and The Union. I especially like Centennial Girl; it is my new favourite song.

It is only ten small dollars to go to tic's Barnstorm10 and it is byob [and byo other things too]. The ten spot gets you six bands, one of the coolest venues on the planet and the chance to see my new rural country themed sombrero.

For more info go to www.barnstorm.ca. It is only 45 minutes from Ottawa and well worth the drive.

A piece of heaven on earth plus byob plus six bands plus me.

OMG.

771...Wednesday Morning 93.1

You can wake up to me on 93.1CKCU.

Six sharp.

I will be joined by Emily O and, in theory, tic will join us to talk about Barnstorm10.

I say theory because Mr. tic is a very cranky man, a curmudgeon, and he often doesn't do what he says he is going to do.

I hope he shows because it is fun watching him get angrier and angrier.

If I disagree with him: pissed off.

If I agree with him: pissed off.

On the plus side tic has had a vasectomy so the line stops when he dies.

684...Programming Note

With the humidex, which, by the way, tic [all lower case; attracts attention] who 1/you have never heard of and 2/has been on the radio in Ottawa for a quarter century, albeit CKCU, doesn't believe in, is at 41/103, hottest this year I do believe and that means that today is a good day to chillax indoors.

I love it when people such as tic don't believe in things that are, well, not up for discussion such as the humidex, wind chill and my personal favourite, seat belts. I would guess that after exiting the car through the front windscreen one belatedly converts to a seat belt belief system, albeit [the WFDS word of the day] a bit too late.

I like tic so I do hope that even though he thinks that the humidex and the wind chill are some sort of scam I do hope that he believes in seatbelts coz I would hate to lose him.

513...Me And tic 93.1 CKCU

Tomorrow morning.

If you haven't listened, I am on at 6 a.m.

Set your alarm.

It is worth it.

I will probably be joined by tic and if you think I have a big ego, geez, they have to butter the doors to get this guy's head in the building.

Last week he attacked, viciously attacked in a verbal fashion, Billy Mays, who, by the way, had died earlier that week.

Tomorrow may be he will push a kid out of a wheel chair on air or drown a kitten.

Fingers crossed.

287...The Constitution Comes Through Again

Sipping my morning coffee and flipping through the South Florida Sun Sentinel and I come across this timely article on the practical early 21st century application of the Constitiution of the United States of America.

In this case Palm Beach County Judge Laura Johnson used the document to overturn Riviera Beach's saggy pants ordinance which proscribed wearing pants below the waist exposing skin or underwear.

As if.

A referendum endorsing the ban, a ban that would warm the heart of my colleague tic, was supported by 72 per cent of city voters in March of last year and the city started enforcement eleven months ago. City spokesman Rose Anne Brown said less than 20 people wear caught after the ordinance, which carried fines up to 300$, was promulgated.

In a related story, belt sales reached record levels during the second half of 2008 in Riviera Beach, Florida.
