This morning I chatted with James Richardson from Third Wall Theatre Company about his presentation of the Old Times at the Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre, which runs from tonight until October 3rd at the Holland and Wellington, Ottawa, venue.
The play, which is in an intimate 80 seat theatre, was written by the late Harold Pinter in the 1970s and has been updated and contemporized.
While preparing to go to see Old Times recall the words of the author himself: "The past is what you remember, imagine you remember, convince yourself you remember, or pretend you remember.” Stirring.

A park in Ottawa about 3 kms south of Parliament Hill, Lansdowne has been a park since 1868 and has had a stadium since 1889. Last refitted completely in the mid 1960's the time has come to redo Lansdowne.

847...Do Not Steal
Not a good plan but especially if you steal something that licks.
For example, a dog.
Megan Gillis of the Ottawa Sun has an example of such circumstance. Richard Marcel Dore got tossed in jail for 90 days last week for stealing a dog for his girlfriend for Valentine's Day. What our hero did was go into Pet World at Carlingwood in Ottawa and pick out a puppy as a Valentine's Day gift for his beloved. Sadly, and this is where the story goes wrong for Mr. Dore, the Boston Terrier Bulldog mix cost 1000.00 dollars which he did not have at the exact time he decided on said dog. When he went into the store the next day the scoundrels that run Pet World had sold the pooch.
As he told a probation officer "They did me wrong---they sold the dog." See, not his fault.
Since it was not his fault Mr. Dore felt compelled to right that wrong by returning at night and doing a smash and grab. The smash was the store's rear window. The grab was the two month old puppy.
Amazingly Judge Celynne Dorval did not see the wronged party as being Mr. Dore and gave him 90 days and told him to pay 7oo bones for the window he broke plus a year of probation.

845...The Great One Takes A Break
Rob Longley in the Sun newspapers Sunday reports that Wayne Gretzky is taking a bit of break from coaching the Phoenix Coyotes, a team in tremendous flux, much of it coming from the pressure Jim Balsillie and the bankruptcy courts are putting on the club.
Not only is 99 the coach of the club, he is also a managing partner of the Coyotes and is paid about eight million a year. In bankruptcy court Friday the NHL admitted that they are trying to take over the team and trying to negotiate off that number.
General Manager Don Maloney is quoted as saying the true Canadian Idol "...thought it was better to sit back for a few days and evaluate the situation."
Interestingly this story is getting bigger play in Ottawa, Winnipeg, Halifax than in Phoenix. That should tell Gary Bettman something. It won't, but it should.

838...BTW
If the powers that be in all parties in Canada would just make the trek to the Tim Horton's in their neck of the woods they wood find that, rhetoric aside, Canadians don't want an election.
And you don't even have to go out side the Ottawa version of the Beltway, which is the Queensway/417.
The Tim's six blocks from the Hill at Gloucester and Bank is a fount of normal people who don't want a election.
Sometimes smart people think way too much, eh?

835...It Is Barnstorm Day Today
It seems like only last year that Barnstorm9 happened.
Well, it was last year.
Anyhow, this year is now and so is Barnstorm10. www.barnstorm.ca
It all goes down today in Finch, Ontario, about 45 minutes south east of Ottawa and yes, I will be there, sombrero on head, Sharpie in hand.
You can bring your own beer, tent, food, whatever and there will be six great bands including the Evil Farm Children, who are like surf rock meets Nashville Pussy meets Motorhead.

833...Barnstorm Tomorrow/Party Like It Is 1999
In less than 24 hours I will be in bucolic Finch, Ontario, sipping on a cold one and listening to great music like Ken Workman and The Union. I especially like Centennial Girl; it is my new favourite song.
It is only ten small dollars to go to tic's Barnstorm10 and it is byob [and byo other things too]. The ten spot gets you six bands, one of the coolest venues on the planet and the chance to see my new rural country themed sombrero.
For more info go to www.barnstorm.ca. It is only 45 minutes from Ottawa and well worth the drive.
A piece of heaven on earth plus byob plus six bands plus me.
OMG.

808...Ottawa Citizen Public Service
The paper of record in our Canadian capital, the Ottawa Citizen, strives to not only inform and entertain the citizen's of Ottawa, Gatineau and the world through the web but also strives to serve the community.
Its level of service reached its epoch on Labour Day when the OC ran a story on the frontpage that showed all of us how to get fake identity cards, you know, fake driver's license's, health cards, whatever. They even provided, in headline form, a page capture of the service, ID Copy, and its website, id-copy.com.
A lot of underage drinkers may not have known how to get fake ID until the Ottawa Citizen did this valuable, no, invaluable service. Brings tears to my eyes.
Do I smell a Pulitzer Prize?

744...Things To Do In Ottawa When You Are Alive
Two exciting things happening tonight in the town that fun forgot.
First off, Bedouin Soundclash, a Kingston, Ontario band formed in the early part of the century, are playing for free, free, free at SuperEx. They are a big, big, big deal, just coming off a tour with No Doubt and everything.
Secondly, Carleton University's women's basketball team are playing the first of two games against schools from America. Tonight for next to free, free, free they are playing the 2009 America East champions from the University of Vermont, which features America East Player of the Year Courtnay Pilypaitis from St. Peter's in Gloucester, Ottawa, Ontario. Miss Pilypaitis, who is only going into her junior year with the Catamounts, is on track to be the greatest player in the history of Vermont basketball.
Be still my heart.

This is cut and paste from Barry McLoughlin's blog on what he sees going on in the Dany Heatley slmozzle.
For your erudition I am one of Mr. McLoughlin, world class spin doctor, says so right on his web site, I am one of Mr. McLoughlin's two followers.
I, by the way have *3*.
Which makes my base 50 per cent larger than Mr. McLoughlin's.

Hockey Star Faces PR Challenge
Welcome back to the dog days of August. Often it's a time when otherwise mundane stories can escalate into front-page national stories, causing pain and notoriety - whether deserved or not. For Ottawa Senators fans, the handling of star forward Dany Heatley fits into this category of news event. Word had leaked out back in June that Dany was unhappy with the way coach Cory Clousten had been treating him and told Senators management that he wished to be traded (only one year into a six year, $40 million plus contract. Outrage immediately followed - casting Dany as a spoiled, ungrateful brat turning his back on Ottawa fans. [Whoever said politics is mean? Sports fans can show no mercy at all.]
Dany waited all summer, refusing to say anything, and then only days before beginning hockey camp with the Canadian Olympic team, he holds a conference call/news conference.
Did he meet the test? Clearly not. What went wrong? I was interviewed on that and here is the resulting Ottawa Citizen story:
http://www.ottawacitizen.com/sports/contradictory+message/1918390/story.html
Personally I think the problem with Dany Heatley is that he doesn't like his new boss, ain't thrilled with living in Ottawa/Kanata and has the resources to tell the Senators and his employers to go f'k themselves and that pisses off the 99.9 per cent of us that have to do what we have to do.
That's what I think.
No need to rebuild his image; 35 goals this season and a medal in Vancouver will do that just nicely.
And if he was some 3rd line schmo, we would not be having this conversation; he would suck it up and be happy.

718...Did You Know Canada Is At War?
And in a recession?
There is also a lot of other funky stuff going down, homelessness, a bit of crime, archaic drug laws that criminalize non criminals, the lack of a CFL team in Ottawa.
All this pales of course when one thinks of la cause celebre Dany Heatley in our National Capital.
Mr. Heatley is on the front page of both of the Anglo papers in Ottawa, The Sun and The Citizen and, perhaps, I don't live in a francophone area, on the front of Le Droit.
In case you don't know, Mr. Heatley is a hockey player for the Ottawa Senators but he doesn't care for his new coach [read: boss] and has had enough of living in Ottawa, working for the Senators and wants to be transferred elsewhere. From the reaction of Joe Fan, who doesn't know better and muckty mucks like Barry McWhat'sHisName, Mayor Larry's spin doctor, one would think Mr. Heatley is some kind of devil, er, demon.
Think it through folks. First off, he is a hockey player, an entertainer. Two, have you ever had a job you di'nt like, a boss you di'nt like? This seems to be the case with Mr. Heatley.
Doesn't like his new boss, is bored with the town, wants to move.
Nothing more, nothing less.
Get a grip Ottawa. Gatineau. Eastern Ontario. Western Quebec.

Welcome to the major leagues of cold, brother.

614...This Is The Week Ottawa Gets A Mayor
Wednesday, August 5, the day before Hiroshima Day, is the day that Judge Douglas Cunningham will drop a metaphorical bomb on the City of Ottawa and tell Mayor Larry O'Brien whether he can stay or has to go go.
Interestingly the concerned citizens, concerned anonymous citizens, who contribute to ZeroMeansZero blog, are quiet today. Of course one can only guess why but guess in an educated manner. The why is because the concerned citizens, concerned anonymous citizens, who contribute to the ZeroMeansZero blog are only concerned when they are at their work stations. To break it down even further, these pillars of society, who are quick to accuse Mayor O'Brien of being dishonest, only contribute to the ZMZ hatefest when they themselves are being dishonest, stealing time from their employers.

606...Happy Colonel By Day
For those of us living in Ontario, August 1st is a holiday. It used to be called Civic Holiday but, of course, that is way, way, way to simple. Cananot have that, eh? So now each region gives the first Monday in August a local name.
My MPP, Yasir Naqvi, sent me an email informing me that in Ottawa the day is Colonel By Day. He is the guy who, for trade and defense against the Yankees, dug a ditch from Ottawa to Kingston, the Rideau Canal.
Yay.
Bonus points are scored living on the border with Quebec because, as is the way with many things, if Ontario says up, Quebec says down and La Belle doesn't have a holiday on August 1st. Western Quebec does have some rocking sales in the malls including my personal favourite, 24s of beer, quality beer not Wildcat, for well under 20 dollars.
Vive la difference.
