The beloved mayor, er, Mayor, of Ottawa, Larry O'Brien once referred to the homeless as pigeons.
God bless him, so progressive is he.
The city fathers in Surrey, British Columbia, a suburb south of Vancouver have not referred to their street people as homeless but they have done something even more repulsive. The Surrey North Delta Leader ran a story last month that reported that their manure plan to control homeless people, an initiative initiated between city staff and the local detachment of the RCMP [who act as city cops in Surrey; a common way of policing in the West] has been controversial.
Deputy City Manager Dan Bottrill said he is still trying to determine exactly who came up with the idea of spreading smelly chicken manure around a Whalley social service building to drive away vagrants.
Beauty, eh?

718...Did You Know Canada Is At War?
And in a recession?
There is also a lot of other funky stuff going down, homelessness, a bit of crime, archaic drug laws that criminalize non criminals, the lack of a CFL team in Ottawa.
All this pales of course when one thinks of la cause celebre Dany Heatley in our National Capital.
Mr. Heatley is on the front page of both of the Anglo papers in Ottawa, The Sun and The Citizen and, perhaps, I don't live in a francophone area, on the front of Le Droit.
In case you don't know, Mr. Heatley is a hockey player for the Ottawa Senators but he doesn't care for his new coach [read: boss] and has had enough of living in Ottawa, working for the Senators and wants to be transferred elsewhere. From the reaction of Joe Fan, who doesn't know better and muckty mucks like Barry McWhat'sHisName, Mayor Larry's spin doctor, one would think Mr. Heatley is some kind of devil, er, demon.
Think it through folks. First off, he is a hockey player, an entertainer. Two, have you ever had a job you di'nt like, a boss you di'nt like? This seems to be the case with Mr. Heatley.
Doesn't like his new boss, is bored with the town, wants to move.
Nothing more, nothing less.
Get a grip Ottawa. Gatineau. Eastern Ontario. Western Quebec.

668...ZeroMeansZero Still Going Strong
Props to whomever is behind this scurrilous I-hate-Mayor-Larry-O'Brien site.
And I mean that.
Unlike its rival blog, City Holler, ZeroMeansZero has survived the predicted exoneration of His Worship and continues providing much needed discourse in a city that has little.
The major complaint that I have with this site is the fact that virtually everyone signs themselves as Anonymous.
Man up.
That is all.

If one were to believe what one heard on talk radio, the one outlet being CFRA in Ottawa, and if one were to believe the chatter at the Tim Horton's and the Starbucks and the McDonald's I was at yesterday [I have a serious caffeine addiction] Mayor Larry O'Brien, well, everybody knew he was going to be found not guilty.

Point finale: As maligned as CFRA is in this town, they are the only over the air media outlet that are giving the outcome of the Mayor Larry O'Brien trial the coverage that is deserves.
Love them or hate them, they are doing what the other 30 plus over the air stations in town are not, that is covering the biggest and most important trial in the history of this community as fully and completely as they can.

When you read and hear and see how vital local TV is to your town think about this.
It is 10 04 am on Wednesday August 5, 2009 and Mayor O'Brien will be facing the music in a few minutes in the biggest court case in the history of Ottawa.
We have 15 or more over the air stations in Ottawa.
Your airwaves by the way.
None of them are reporting live from the courthouse.

Ottawa's NewsLeader, CJOH, thinks that Twice In A Lifetime, a bad 10 year old Canadian show, Al Waxman's last kick at the can, is more important than reporting on the Mayor of Ottawa's verdict.
CTV's other station in town, the A Channel, thinks that the light weight American talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, is more relevant to the community than reporting on the Mayor of Ottawa's verdict.
CBC English is showing Wilbur; CBC French is showing Des Kiwis; Global is running an informercial; TVA a poorly dubbed version of the 1970's show Columbo and; TQS has another dubbed US show, which must have cost them tens of dollars coz I don't even know what show it is and trust me, if I don't know it, well, you get the idea.

614...This Is The Week Ottawa Gets A Mayor
Wednesday, August 5, the day before Hiroshima Day, is the day that Judge Douglas Cunningham will drop a metaphorical bomb on the City of Ottawa and tell Mayor Larry O'Brien whether he can stay or has to go go.
Interestingly the concerned citizens, concerned anonymous citizens, who contribute to ZeroMeansZero blog, are quiet today. Of course one can only guess why but guess in an educated manner. The why is because the concerned citizens, concerned anonymous citizens, who contribute to the ZeroMeansZero blog are only concerned when they are at their work stations. To break it down even further, these pillars of society, who are quick to accuse Mayor O'Brien of being dishonest, only contribute to the ZMZ hatefest when they themselves are being dishonest, stealing time from their employers.

569...Larry O'Brien To Be Acquitted August 12
Now that is the kind of optimism this town needs.
Twas in today's Orleans EMC the news that Judge Cunningham, Douglas to his friends, will offer his ruling, well, first he will talk and talk and talk and talk and talk and then offer his ruling, August 12.
For those of you out of the loop, Larry O'Brien is the mayor of Ottawa and has been accused of being a bad boy by wanna be mayor [and wanna be city councillor] Terry Kilrea. Mr. Kilrea, a well known window licker in the Nation's Capital has proved himself a brilliant witness for the defense.
Stay tuned.

502...Apparently Vanier Is A Voisinage
I seem to have touched a wee nerve with post 499 which was about a wedding that turned out badly in the United Kingdom. I believe I called it a very Vanier wedding.

For those of you who do not know Vanier, a voisinage in Ottawa [voisinage is the uppity way of saying quartier which is the french way of saying neighbourhood which is the white way of saying 'hood], is a colourful voisinage/quartier/neighbourhood/'hood just east of the Rideau River in Ottawa.
It has a lovely strip club, The Playmate, a number of by the hour motels [I believe the Concorde Motel, 333 Montreal is the jewel in that realm, n'est pas?], the hookers and johns to support such, a thriving crack cocaine industry and many pawn shops. Plus a crime rate that exceeds that of the rest of our bucolic capital.
Nonetheless, I am sure Mr. deBeauxOs sees things differently than I do and I apologize for upseting his progressive applecart.
I will try to subscribe to group think in the future and I thank you for pointing out my foibles.

As reported everywhere in the Nation's Capital, Sun, Citizen, Le Droit and on and on, Hizzoner Larry O'Brien, will have to wait until August 12 to find out his fate in his influence pedalling trial.
He will be acquitted says moi.
His accuser is former mayoralty candidate Terry Kilrea who was aptly described in his summation by Mayor O'Brien's lawyer, Michael Edelson, "He's dumb like a fox. He's street smart, devious and disingenuous."

329...How Did I Miss This? Buster Douglas/Ott
Just saw the following on ZeroMeansZero, an anti Larry O'Brien blog that seems to be branching out to be more community minded.
It was February 11, 1990 that James "Buster" Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson. Las Vegas had Douglas as a 42 to 1 underdog at the time.
Congratulations to the Boys and Girls Club for last night's spectacular "Ringside for Youth" held at the Aberdeen Pavilion that raised about $125,000. Buster attended as a special guest.
Missed that entirely, but kudos to the Boys and Girls Club and it would have been so cool to see the man who took out the man when the man was really the man.
