797...Where Were The Carleton U Cheerleaders?

The Carleton Ravens, last year's CIS basketball champions, and winners of six of the last seven championships in the CIS, played St. John's University today at Carleton.

Carleton had a four point lead at the half but couldn't hit a shot for the first ten minutes of the second and ended up losing by 17.

But, but, but, where were the Carleton University cheerleaders?

Cheerleaders, cheer squads, dance teams, mascots: they are all a big part of the university sports experience.

So where oh where were the CU cheerleaders?

Well, never ask a question without knowing the answer is what my dad always said.

They, the CU cheerleaders, who, by the way, are terrible in that Special Olympics way, were at the PetroCan on the corner of Bronson and Gladstone holding signs asking those of us who like cheerleaders to honk.

Bit of dilemma there because the Carleton cheerleaders are to cheerleading what the Washington Generals are to basketball.

794...St. John's Versus Carleton And U Of O Today

Game time is 1 at Carleton; 8 30 at the University of Ottawa.

St. John's Red Storm are a big time Big East basketball program that were a power in the NCAA until they were coerced into changing their name, Redmen, to the Red Storm in the early '90s. Normally I would say "damn you, political correctness" but, in this case, being a Syracuse Orange fan and all, I will give the pc racists points. Now if you would just go after the Hoyas and Huskies all would be good.

See you at Carleton, Sharpie in hand, black and red sombrero on my noggin.

744...Things To Do In Ottawa When You Are Alive

Two exciting things happening tonight in the town that fun forgot.

First off, Bedouin Soundclash, a Kingston, Ontario band formed in the early part of the century, are playing for free, free, free at SuperEx. They are a big, big, big deal, just coming off a tour with No Doubt and everything.

Secondly, Carleton University's women's basketball team are playing the first of two games against schools from America. Tonight for next to free, free, free they are playing the 2009 America East champions from the University of Vermont, which features America East Player of the Year Courtnay Pilypaitis from St. Peter's in Gloucester, Ottawa, Ontario. Miss Pilypaitis, who is only going into her junior year with the Catamounts, is on track to be the greatest player in the history of Vermont basketball.

Be still my heart.

694...Carleton Spanks Towson State

Bad.

95 to 83 but it could have been worse.

Mind you, the refereeing, and I am a serious fan of Carleton, was egregious. I don't think the refs were biased but on this night they were less than competent. At times it seemed as though the game was five on eight not five on five.

The big breakthrough that is good news for the defending national champion Ravens is that first year player Tyson Hinz, out of Ottawa St. Matt's, shone with 18 points.

The game was won on the boards with Carleton out rebounding the Tigers by a huge 39 to 22 margin.

686...Carleton Alumni Wreck Towson Tigers

Well, not wreck, but win by 10.

69 to 59.

I was there and will be there tomorrow night, Tuesday, at Carleton, when the defending national champion Ravens will be playing the Towson State Tigers.

Game time is 8 pm. Look for me in my black sombrero. I will have my Sharpie with me for your autograph pleasure.

See, I could be a Senator.

685...Carleton Basketball Tonight At Eight

Go Ravens!

They are playing Towson State, the Tigers, from Maryland and the Colonial Conference in exhibition basketball on the campus of the mighty U of K, Carleton.

Monday night the Tigers are playing the Raven's alumni team; Tuesday it is the defending Canadian champions versus the Tigers. Towson State is coming off a rough season last year, going 12 and 22 including 5 and 13 in the Colonial Conference, a conference that spit out a Final Four team a couple of years ago in George Mason and a first round draft choice this year, Eric Naynor from Virginia Commonwealth University.

I will be there, of course, and in honor of alma mater will be wearing my red and black sombrero.

12...Racial Profiling

A quick note.

I got racially profiled last night at MacLaren's, a poolhall/bar on Elgin Street in Ottawa.

I was, and this is relevant, on my way back from the U of Ottawa/Queen's basketball game, wearing a Syracuse hoodie, a 'cuse hat, watching Nate Robinson win the NBA All Star game dunk contest when it happened.

I was talking to this East African man, I will call him Jamal [because that is what his name is] about the dunks, the green uni Mr. Robinson was wearing, whether the Raptors will ever go deep in the playoffs, trying to sell him on going to see U of Ottawa play Carleton next Saturday at the U of Ottawa and on and on and on while watching the dunk competition. Not a lick of ice in my field of vision.

And then it happened.

He asked me, no, he told me, told me, right out of the blue that he didn't understand or care much for hockey but I obviously was a big hockey fan ['cause I am a middle aged White guy] and that was the end of that.

The knife cuts both ways.

Pretty Darn Strange, eh?

3...Tomorrow

Tomorrow on the wireless, http://www.ckcufm.com/ and 93.1CKCU over the air in Ottawa/Gatineau at 6 am I, the World Famous Dan Shields, will, theoretically, be chatting in studio with Brad MordenArtistic DirectorLittle Voice Big Sound...he says he is bringing me a coffee...I like him.

Brad is promoting Ottawa's Art Out Loud Opening Show - January 30th. Little Voice Big Sound is launching the first in a full year series showcasing the diversity of Ottawa's artistic talent. Over the course of 2009, Little Voice Big Sound will bring together visual artists, local musicians, poets, dancers and actors to share their artistic expression of solidarity for a more positive world. Venues will range across the city and integrate all elements of Ottawa's artistic and cultural communities.

The Grand Opening EventDate: Friday, January 30thPlace: Don Monet's CUBE Gallery, 7 Hamilton Ave. N., right next to the Ugly Club [aka the Carleton Tavern]. Just get off the Queensway at Parkdale and head north to Armstrong and hang a left.

This is going to be a brilliant show and I am looking forward to talking to Brad and maybe schmoozing a bit with the glitterati of Hintonburg at the event.

Also tomorrow morning, tic, the man with the 7 person fan club [which is 7 more than I have...] and I will argue about something inane from 6 30 am til 7.

Finally, tomorrow night, in my living room, on The Score, Carleton men, number 1 in Canada play the Gee Gee's D'U of Ottawa, the number 2 team in Canada live from Scotia Bank Place. The women's teams who are also quite competitive this year, play at six pm. If you come over, please, bring libations.

Libations.

That is why I got a degree in English.

So I can use words like libation.

Without sounding like a toff.
