904...Lansdowne Park

A park in Ottawa about 3 kms south of Parliament Hill, Lansdowne has been a park since 1868 and has had a stadium since 1889. Last refitted completely in the mid 1960's the time has come to redo Lansdowne.

My friend and Ottawa Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi sent me a note with a list of meeting places next week that will be dealing with this issue, an issue that doesn't just impact Ottawa but also impacts the country.

Please remember if you attend these meetings, that the city is paying for renovations to the stadium and taking out a 129 million dollar loan to pay for it. Minto and the rest of the OSEG partners are not contributing to the stadium.

Financing for this loan is supposed to come from a very complex profit share agreement for the management of the shopping centre and condos on the site. There's no guarantee that the revenue will cover the cost of the loan.

Think about whether you like this model. In 20 years, when the Ron Maslin playhouse needs renovations, will you be comfortable with putting up a mall in Walter Baker park to try to pay for it?
