618...Conservatives Back Hi Speed Internet

Welcome to the 1980's Tories!

Wow.

Edgy.

Stephen McDougall in The Record, Sherbrooke, Quebec's English newspaper, writes this morning that at a press conference last week at a community center in Adstock, a hamlet of2,800 just east of Thetford Mines, our beloved Prime Minister Stephen Harper said his government will spend $225 million over three years to help finance high speed Internet upgrade projects. He said the funding would generate jobs and allow rural and remote communities in Canada to have better computer access to more public and private services.

This is all nice, don't get me wrong, but the fact is that high speed is available for people living in the sticks, it just costs more. Their is a price to be paid for living in paradise, eh?

Perhaps, just perhaps, Mr. Harper is using this issue to pander to rural residents and secure their votes and his future.

Shocking.

346...I Had A Girlfriend, Who Looked Like

A boyfriend. Or something like that.

Rule number one of Internet dating is, if they won't meet you after the first week, they are never going to meet you.

If only Dr. Antonio Castro had of followed that rule. Dr. Castro, who is both the Doctor to the Cuban baseball team and Fidel Castro's son, fell in love with Claudia Valencia, a 26-year-old Colombian and had over 20 Internet chats with her over the last eight months. I dare say Dr. Castro fell in love with Miss Valencia.

One problem.

To quote Lou Reed "Miami, FLA..she was a he...", 46 year old Luis Dominguez, a Cuban-born Miamian who said he orchestrated the sting to "shatter the myth" of an impenetrable" security system around the Castro family. In a story that the Miami Herald ran last week, Mr. Dominguez said that Dr. Castro revealed that the elites live differently, better, than the non elites in Cuba.

Uh, duh.

Just like everywhere else.

Nonetheless it is pretty chill that Castro Junior got schooled by a middle aged dude pretending to be a hot girly girl.

241...Global Village Basketball, Tomorrow

Tomorrow is the day, June 10th, 2009, the day for Global Village Basketball.

It is an unusual first time event that is linking together various pickup games of basketball through the Internet into one big meta-game by adding all the scores together.

Bouncing out of Toronto, Ontario, organizer Sean Smith has video commitments from such disparate places as China, Uruguay and Poland.

234...Toughest Job In The World

Journalist.

More specifically, being a journalist in North Korea.

More, more specifically, being an American journalist in North Korea.

To that end The Los Angeles Times this morning offers late-breaking news that, after a two-day trial, that Laura Ling, CNN's Lisa Ling is her older sister, and Euna Lee, both of Current TV, were convicted of a grave crime against the state and sentenced to 12 years of hard labor. I never want to go to jail but I really never want to go to jail in North Korea and as for hard labour, well, I am rather delicate. Ms. Link and Ms. Lee were tried by the nation's highest court so there's no appeal, but most seem to agree the isolationist regime will be using the journalists as bargaining chips with Washington.

On top of jail avoidance I never want to be a bargaining chip either.

For your erudition, Current TV is partially owned by the inventor of the Internet, Vice President Al Gore, and is painfully hip with a reliance on viewer produced content i.e. smart young adults with video cameras who are killing time before going to grad school or getting real world jobs but have a passion for telling stories. It is on cable networks in the United States.

12 years.

That sucks.

Big time.
