952...When He Is Right He Is Right

Michael Ignatieff has said no truer words than those reported by the Canadian Press in a story just moved:

"'How do I explain to these people that I keep letting this government go on?' Ignatieff told reporters. 'And that's why, in my heart of hearts, after much reflection, we've decided as a party that we can't continue to give the government confidence in the House of Commons.'"

Jack Layton, the ball is in your court brother, your court.

"'We will do our job, even if they will not,' Ignatieff told the nearly empty Conservative benches in the Commons after detailing his list of government failings for more than 10 minutes."

948...The View From Montreal

La Presse, the popular Montreal broadsheet, weighs in on what is happening in La Belle and, more specifically, up the street from La Presse in Outremont.

Andre Pratt postulates that the next Prime Minister of Canada may have hit a road bump in the last few days, one that will only serve to boost the Bloc Quebecois. He makes the point that in the last five years or so the two parties that can and will govern this country for the foreseeable future, the Liberals and Conservatives, have not done a great job at attracting the vote of Quebecers.

Mr. Pratt's take on this current situation is that history shows that federal party leaders, even when they come from Quebec, need a strong Quebec lieutenant. A boss. An Ernest Lapointe or a Marc Lalonde type.

My take on the situation is similar; like it or not, Quebec is Quebec and it is important to realize that. I just think that it is a bit early to do like media have been doing for the last few days, attacking Michael Ignatieff.

The only party that truly understands the dynamics of Canada from Sea to Shining Sea is the Liberal Party and the only leader that gets that is ours.

This is merely a speedbump.

944...Moose Troubles Out West

The Moose in Manitoba potentially have a big problem.

Crestwood's own Mia Rabson, who scribbles for the Winnipeg Free Press, writes in today's fish wrap that "The Manitoba Moose are among the professional sports teams who could find themselves grounded because a recent decision to solve a cross- border charter airline dispute only applies to Air Canada and teams in the National Hockey League."

The Moose are the defending whatever-division-they-play-in-champions and Calder Cup finalists in the American Hockey League and are, next to ice fishing on Lake Winnipeg of course, the place to be seen in the Winnipeg area during the winter months, September to June inclusive.

This Air Canada only rule could also affect other Canuckistanian sports teams, specifically the Toronto Raptors and the Blue Jays.

Joe Volpe, who is the Liberal transport critic was spot on when he said the government was deceptive when it flaunted the NHL/Air Canada agreement during Harper's meeting with President Barack Obama Sept. 16 because they made it seem like they had solved the whole problem not just part of the problem.

Imagine, the current government being deceptive.

As if.

943...Are Insecure Liberals A Problem?

Or is it insecure Tories?

Methinks it is the latter.

Our beloved Prime Minister Stephen Harper was speaking yesterday at an Irving owned machine yard in Saint John, New Brunswick and a number of prominent, i.e., elected, Liberals wanted to go see the Prime Minister of all speak.

Macleans.ca tells us that "Moncton MP Brian Murphy and New Brunswick Liberal MLAs Abel LeBlanc and Stuart Jamieson, the latter of whom was designated by the provincial Liberal government as its official representative at the event...", were turned away at the door.

Saint John Conservative MP Rodney Weston says that the issue was security.

Or insecurity.

935...Now On To More Important Things

The party that should be running the show will be introducing a motion today to topple the Tory government today.

The Canadian Press reports that the Liberals will table a non-confidence motion in the Commons today and bring a vote on that Thursday. According to the story I am sourcing this is probably going to fail but at least, unlike, well, not to point fingers but, Jack Layton, hello, at least Mikey I talks the talk and walks the walk.

Gilles Ducppe, the Bloc Quebecois leader, says that he will support the Liberal motion.

This week we find out if the NDPers really are true to their convictions or going to hang with their friends in the Conservative Party. Like they did earlier this month.

The NDP's only Quebec MP Thomas Mulcair said today "...the important thing is to try to keep Parliament working so that we can do things that are in the public interest.'' He failed to mention that if the election is held this fall the NDP will get beaten like a rented mule.

913...Another Reason To Hate Toronto

Add this to the list:

Tories making inroads in Toronto, poll suggests-CBC‏

EKOS new poll done for the CBC shows the Tories with a five point lead, 42 to 37 on the Liberals in the Greater Toronto Area.

Stugots.

899...The Next Prime Minister Speaks The Truth

The Canadian Press reports that in a speech to the Toronto Board of Trade earlier Monday the next Prime Minister of Canada said that upon taking office he would open the books and conduct a full audit of public finances.

Michael Ignatieff said that the Conservatives have made a mess of Canada's economy and that his party will be the one to clean it up.

After four years of Stephen Harper's Conservative reign of error Mr. Ignatieff suggests that we ask the question "Are we better off than we were four years ago?''

886...Mikey I Goes On The Offensive

I believe it was homecoming week or something in Kitchener-Waterloo this weekend, I do know that The Score had a football game between Laurier and Waterloo on the tube. For those of you wondering who won said game, let me tell you that Joe Paopao is coaching at Waterloo so you know that Laurier won.

Tying in with homecoming was a visit by the next Prime Minister of Canada Michael Ignatieff who, as Chuck Howitt reports in this mornings Waterloo Region Record, made a visit to Wilf's, a pub on campus at Sir Wilfrid Laurier University. While having a pop or two Mr. Ignatieff, and I am quoting here, "...attacked the Liberals on a broad range of issues, including the rising deficit, high unemployment, its response to the H1N1 flu epidemic and its failure to fix the problem over medical isotopes."

Note to Chuck Howitt: I don't believe that Mikey I attacked the Liberals; you may want to reread things before you send them to your somnolent proof reading staff at The Record.
I am going to assume Mr. Ignatieff attacked the Conservative Party and rightfully so.
Two victories for Laurier on Saturday. One a win over the crosstown Waterloo Warriors and secondly a visit from the next PM.
Good times, good times.

880...Gotta Ask:Why/How R Tories Ahead In Polls?

As Detroit and Montreal are to cities, they are where the unthinkable happens on a regular basis; the Conservative Party of Canada is to political parties, they are where the unthinkable happens on a regular basis.

Yet, and let's be realistic folks, if an election were held today Stephen Harper and his crew would get more seats than the Liberals and form yet another minority parliament.

What the f'ck do these guys have to do to convince Canadians that they are unfit to govern?

Take this week. The Health Minister's department sends body bags, properly called post mortem kits because it is more than just a bag, there are toe tags and everything, before vaccine to remote communities in Manitoba, remote aboriginal communities.

They are going to skate. Sure, the native leaders are pissed. "It was insulting," said David Harper, Grand Chief of the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak, quoted in today's Globe and Mail. "Body bags may be part of flu preparations, but so is medications. Why do we get body bags before we get medication?" The chattering classes are also pissed but the inbetweens, the ones who decide elections, not so much.

Wait, there is more.

The former national caucus chair, married to a minister, Helena Guergis, Rahim Jaffer, got busted for drinking and driving and cocaine. What makes this ironic in the GOP kind of way is Mr. Jaffer, the only Conservative to lose in Alberta last year, pinned his electoral hopes in 2008, as reported on Global National last night, on smearing the NDP as pro drugs with attack ads. The arrest of an anti drug champion on multiple drug charges is, well, ironic, doncha think?

Yet the Conservatives are going to skate and spin their way out of this too and continue to lead in the polls.

WTF?

873...More Tory Propaganda

This time from a more credible source, Peter Worthington, in the Toronto Sun.

Mr. Worthington postulates that the next Prime Minister of Canada, Michael Ignatieff, may be getting bored with partisan politics and may just be gerrymandering an election so he can get defeated and go back to scribbling books and sipping champagne on the international smart guy circuit.

The emminent Toronto Sun writer goes on to say that he is speculating and that now that both the Bloc Quebecois and NDP seem to have backed off what was sure-fire election agitation a couple of weeks ago, maybe Mr. Ignatieff is now captive of election-mania rather than its instigator. He also makes the important point that since the Tories seem likely to benefit most if there's an election, maybe Stephen Harper will provoke one.

After a few hundred words disparaging partisan politics, Mr. Worthington does point out that Mikey I is an intriguing fellow and that it would be surprising if one as bright at the next PM wasn't distracted a bit by the goings on on the Hill.

872...It's Over Now

Charles W. Moore, a Nova Scotia based freelance writer and editor, writes in today's Telegraph-Journal, a bird cage liner that is prominent in New Brunswick, that the remedy for all that ails in the halls of power in Ottawa and, by extension Canada, is to give Stephen Harper his majority.

This should give pause to all good Liberals [and those from the Orange and Green parties too].

Charles W. Moore has spoken.

In the Telegraph-Journal.

In his thoughtful article Mr. Moore points out that the Liberals received support in only 77 ridings last year and that 2008's result was their worst in over a century.

Actually, Mr. Moore, if you may recall, back in '84 the John Turner Liberals got smoked badly, 40 seats. 2008 - 1984 = not a century.

Why let facts get in the way of a good argument, eh?

But there is more in this poorly researched piece of Conservative drivel and propaganda. Mr. Moore just makes up stuff as he goes along but comes to the same conclusion at each turn: to save Canada from the quagmire it is in one must vote Conservative.

It's over.

Charles W. Moore has spoken.

856...More Reasons Why No Election

Polls released around supper time on Monday show the Tories up 9 on the Liberals and the NDP sinking like a lifeboat full of rejects from NBC's The Biggest Loser. Jack Layton's gang is at their lowest level in years, a mere 12 per cent in comparison to the Tories at 39 and the Liberals at 30. In fact the Dips are within the margin of error of the Green Party who are parked at 8. Imagine the horror in the corridors of non power at NDP HQ if the Greens ever get a leader who has a clue.

The Ipsos-Reid poll reported by Andrew Mayeda of Canwest News Service indicates that anti-election sentiment is running especially high at the moment with 71 per cent of us not wanting to go through yet another election.

Fingers crossed.

849...Here Is Why There Won't Be An Election

For months I been saying privately what Mike De Souza writes about in today's Edmonton Sun.

What I have been saying is that there is not going to be an election because one in five Members of Parliament need to stay put until July of next year to qualify for their pensions. The amount of money at stake is not huge but it is hugeish, to wit, if the 74 affected members [36 Conservatives, 16 Bloc Quebecois MPs, 14 Liberals and eight New Democrats] stay put for another ten months or so they will qualify for a 25,000 dollar annual pension. If they don't and they go down, no pension.

New Democrat Nathan Cullen, who finds himself in the category of members with less than six years of experience, suggested the issue of pensions might be a concern for some of the older politicians. He added, however, that he doubts it is a major factor that could determine whether they try to force or prevent an election.

Interestingly Jack Layton is one of the MPs that needs to build time to get his pension. I would posit that his seat is a safe one but he has seven fellow Dips who also need to build time and at least one, Dennis Bevington from the Western Arctic, is looking at a tough fight to hold his seat and if he loses, no pension. This has to be weighing on his and many other MPs minds.

It all factors in.

841...No One Reads Comments Sooooooo

I am printing this one.

Even though the person that wrote it was not proud or secure enough to sign it he/she/ts/q/etc [see I am politically correct!] he/she/etc makes some valid points:

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "824...Stephen Harper Makes A Video":

Why would Stephen Harper get warm fuzzies over the Opposition? Layton proudly declares he has voted against the Cons 79 times (didn't have to even read the budget to declare the NDP would vote NO!) That's real cooperation, Jack.
As for Ignatieff, he has met with the P.M. 3 times since his coronation in Jan. (twice at the request of the P.M.) His attitude of "he (Harper) knows where to find me" reeks of arrogance. When Harper was in Opposition, he was in constant communication with the P.M. advocating for Canadian people, a high-salaried job that Ignatieff has no clue about as official leader of the opposition. So... 9 months into the year we have heard blustering remarks from Ignatieff about his desire to take down the government no less than 3 times. We are starting to look like a banana republic internationally. The NDP and Liberals equate Harper's "meaness" with not caving in to their expensive demands, other than the budget which was opposition driven. I think the shoe is on the other foot..the Opposition is not cooperating with Harper. If you doubt this check "How'd They Vote" a website which clearly shows the voting records of all M.P.'s. It's an eye-opener!
As for the justice system --WHAT JUSTICE SYSTEM??? Thankfully Harper has initiated a federal agency to support VICTIMS of crime, since they have largely been forgotten by the NDP/Liberals and Bloc.
And NO, the Bloc should have no positions in the outcomes of what happens to the rest of Canada, since their mandate is to separate from it. They represent Quebec--leave it at that. Canadians don't want a nanny state --although lately the groanings indicate we might have to grow up a little. As Kennedy said (paraphrased) "ask what you can do for your country, not what it can do for you."

By the way, about 20 sics in there.

LOL.

832...IxNay To The OalitionCay

That is what Michael Ignatieff says and good on him.

It is reported by all credible news outlets in our land that their will be no sleeping with the enemy for the next Prime Minister of Canada; he is going to lead a government made up entirely of Grits after the next trip to the ballot box.

Unless the Bloc Quebecois or the NDP prop up the Tories this fall that trip is going to be sooner rather than later.

828...John Robson Ottawa Citizen Disses Mikey I

In this morning's fishwrap, John Robson ends his pithy piece with a shot at the next Prime Minister of Canada.

Scribbling about the You Tube ad campaign run by the Liberals, Mr. Robson writes:

For the record, I agree with
his attack on the Harper government's
budgetary policies. The slogan "Nous méritons mieux"
might be a stretch but as for the English version
"We can do better," it shouldn't even be hard.

The last sentence of the piece is the big shot:

The problem is, he has no idea how and doesn't even realize it matters.

819...In Ottawa Centre It Is Scott Bradley

Scott Bradley won the nomination over Janet Yale for the Liberal Party of Canada in Ottawa Centre last night by a margin of 449 to 400.

As the winner, Mr. Bradley will carry the flag for the next Prime Minister of Canada, Michael Ignatieff, in Ottawa Centre and will return Dipper MP Paul Dewar to the career that he truly is suited for, that of a school teacher.

Happy days are not here again but they are closer.

815...Elizabeth May Deathwatch V.2

In response to Post 812 Elizabeth May Deathwatch I recieved this thoughful reply:

janfromthebruce said...

Well than, the libs need to stand down (like they did in Nova Scotia) and give May a free ride.
Or is running as a liberal the only alternative you had in mind?

Thanks for the comment but let's face it, the Liberals stood down in Central Nova and Elizabeth May got her head handed to her.

Ditto in Saanich-Gulf Islands. One on one Gary Lunn would destroy her.

It is fairly obvious to me that if after, as the Globe and Mail's Bill Curry reported earlier this week that the riding was selected "...after extensive party polling and research..." as the best chance for the Green Party leader it means that she has no chance anywhere in Canada.

Personally I think she is trying to position herself for the cash for life sinecure of the Senate of Canada.

814...Ottawa Centre Nomination Tonight

From the outside it looks like a very, very, very close race between Scott Bradley and Janet Yale for the Liberal Party of Canada nod in Ottawa Centre. The nomination meeting is tonight at 6 30 at 440 Albert Street in the middle of the city.

I believe it is the old Ottawa Technical High School.

Voting until 10 this evening.

This will be exciting.

The winner will have the opportunity to take out Paul Dewar, the NDP MP in the OC.

812...Elizabeth May Deathwatch

In the Toronto Star this morning Joanna Smith writes that environmentalist Briony Penn says that Elizabeth May is going to crash and burn in her chosen riding of Saanich-Gulf Islands in B.C.

Ms. Penn knows Saanich-Gulf Islands, the former Green Party card holder ran for the Liberal Party in the last election and was defeated by Tory minister the Honourable Gary Lunn. She says that as much as she would like to see the Green Party leader, Ms. May, in the House of Commons, "...it would take an extraordinary miracle for Elizabeth to win."

What the former Liberal candidate fears most is what is going to happen; Ms. May will split the non Conservative vote giving Mr. Lunn a clear path to reelection.
