Don Hewitt, the brains behind the CBS newsmagazine 60 Minutes, left the planet yesterday, again reported everywhere in North America.
The cause was pancreatic cancer, a huge and incredibly fast killer.
He was 86 but still sharp as a tack.

474...Today On Capitol Hill
CBS's Washington bureau tells us that a Congressional panel will hear today that no one really knows if bottled water is better for you than tap water. Or worser for you. Fact is, bottle l'eau isn't regulated in The Land of the Free.
Meme chose here in the Great White North.
And La Belle.
Americans, and those of us in Canada, drink an enormous amount of bottled water. While there is strict federal regulation of the water that comes out of your tap on all three sides of the border, you generally can't find out where the water in those plastic bottles comes from or what's in it.
Several disturbing reports will be released at the Congressional hearing, focusing on whether tougher regulation of bottled water is needed.
Like, is stuff leaking from those plastic bottles?
Stay tuned.

452...Someone Call The Tongue Troopers
I am aghast.
I bought some fruit in La Belle at Maxi and before biting into said fruit, a black plum if you must know, I peel of the label.
It is with horror that I note that the label says, in E N G L I S H, "Produce of USA". In E N G L I S H.
D0es Bill 101 mean nothing to these people?
The E N G L I S H was not in smaller text than the French, as God and the Province of Quebec decree, no, there was no French at all.
First they take the fruit and then next thing you know the whole Nation of Quebec will be camped in front of their TV's watching Drew Carey on CBS's Price Is Right.
Would someone please call Gilles Duceppe, leader of the Bloc and whomever is in charge of the PQ this week, pronto. I mean, toute suite.
Thank you.

307...Governor Palin Accepts Letterman Apology
Just in from http://www.abcnews.com/, Governor Sarah Palin has accepted former funnyman and CBS talkshow host David Letterman's second apology about a lame joke he made re her daughter and Alex Rodriquez. For more details on the joke and her initial response, check out Post 263 on this blog.
"Of course it's [Mr. Letterman's apology] accepted on behalf of young women, like my daughters, who hope men who 'joke' about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve," the statement read.
"Letterman certainly has the right to 'joke' about whatever he wants to, and thankfully we have the right to express our reaction. And this is all thanks to our U.S. military women and men putting their lives on the line for us to secure America's right to free speech - in this case, may that right be used to promote equality and respect."
Whew, another crisis resolved.

263......Hotties In The News, III = Sarah Palin
Not only can Alaska Governor Sarah Palin see Russia from her house but she also can breathe fire.
And her breath is directed at CBS' late night talk show host David Letterman.
The Governor is piss'd that Mr. Letterman made "sexually perverted comments" about one of her teenage daughters Monday night when he remarked that when Governor Palin and family were at a New York Yankee's game "during the seventh inning, her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriquez."
Today's New York Daily News goes on to report that in a prepared statement the former Vice Presidential candidate said that "Laughter incited by sexually perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity aimed at a 14-year-old girl [her 14 year old daughter, Willow, was the only Palin offspring at the game with her mom] is ... disgusting,". Mr. Letterman covered by saying the joke was about her 18 year old daughter, Bristol.
That is so much better.
A 62 year old former comedian making a joke about a 14 year girl having sex with a 33 year old athlete is disgusting but a 62 year old former comedian making a joke about a 18 year girl having sex with a 33 year old athlete is okay.
Or not.

236...Tony Awards, Last Night
On CBS. Or may be NBC. Perhaps FOX. Definitely not on ABC coz that is where Kobe was.
You missed it too? Thought so.
When you break it down, the Tony Awards are a throw back to the olden days of TV, like really olden, 1940's, 1950's, when TV, American TV, was a reflection of New York City[and later, Los Angeles] popular culture to those in the hinterlands.
Canadian TV is still in that stage, reflecting, on English TV, Toronto or a Toronto centric view of the Canada, to those in the hinterlands; for French TV substitute Montreal for Toronto.
Breaking out of that construct is key.
