One of my fave trainwrecks is Tawny Kitaen.
Those of us of a certain age fondly remember her sprawled on the hood of a car in her then husband David Coverdale's Whitesnake video Here I Go Again a quarter century ago.
Miss Kitaen also was one of the hosts of the classic TV show America's Funniest People in the early 1990's and in 2002 assaulted her husband MLB pitcher Chuck Finley, with a stiletto heel, ending their marriage.
Later in this century she got nailed for cocaine and Saturday the star of the VH1 reality show Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew was charged with DUI.

891...How To Watch Football
Nine 63 inch TVs.
One movie screen size TV.
John Madden is being interviewed by Bob Costa's on the halftime show of the Cowboys/Giants game on NBC and has just revealed that that is how he now watches football on Sundays.
That rocks.
Hard.

665...I Need Ratings For My Radio Show
Perhaps I should kill someone.
That is what former cop Wallace Souza did on his Canal Livre show in Brazil.
Mr. Souza a former policeman who built a political career as the scourge of crime, would feature the killings on Canal Livre show. He had an uncanny knack for being the first on the scene, gathering graphic footage of the victims. Mr. Souza says it was good journalism. The police who are investigating the TV host on suspicion of commissioning at least five murders to give his show a ratings lift, say its success was too good to be true.
Daily News and Analysis reports that Mr. Souza started Canal Livre two years ago on a local commercial station in Manaus, the capital of Brazil's largely lawless Amazonas state. The show featured him in studio railing against rampant crime in the state, punctuated with often exclusive footage of arrests, crime scenes and drug seizures. His crews were often first on the scene. The police say it is because Mr. Souza and his team were behind many of the crimes; he says it is because he is a diligent reporter.
The police investigation, which so far has in a raid on the TV host's house uncovered a number of guns and assault rifles and more than $100,000 in cash, continues.
Ratings through the roof.

Harsh.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that when Paula Abdul resigned from American Idol earlier this week the staff of the number one TV show threw a farewell party sans the star.
"We are so tired of Paula's tantrums, her constant diva behaviour," a source, drunk on excitement, and champagne, said. "She took the concept of 'difficult' to a whole new level. Thank God she's gone."
But what do you really mean?

622...Pee In The Shower
From stuff.co.nz
New TV ads are encouraging Brazilians to save water – by urinating in the shower.
Brazilian environmental group SOS Mata Atlantica says the campaign, running on several television stations, uses humor to persuade people to reduce flushes.
The group says if a household avoids one flush a day, it can save up to 4,380 liters (1,157 gallons) of water annually.
SOS spokeswoman Adriana Kfouri said Tuesday that the ad is "a way to be playful about a serious subject."
The spot features cartoon drawings of people from all walks of life - a trapeze artist, a basketball player, even an alien – urinating in the shower.
Narrated by children's voices, the ad ends with: "Pee in the shower! Save the Atlantic rainforest!"

565...Les Lye Dies, The Boyle Gets Fired
This is what is wrong with Canadian TV and Radio.
Les Lye, 84, died a day or two ago. He had been on Ottawa radio and TV since the late 1940's, primarily on CJOH TV. Tons of press on this one.
There was a time that this town, and your town too, had local radio and TV stars; Les Lye was one of those. When you watch US TV, and I know you do, they have tons of local heroes that the local press and populace get excited about. In Canada, not so much.
Which brings me to Andrew Boyle. Mr. Boyle has been doing mornings for about a decade here in Ottawa, on Hot 89.9 and for the last five years on KISS FM. He also died this week, but only career wise. No press on this one.
Therein lies the problem. Back in the day, and that day is now south of the border, TV and Radio stations understood the value in promoting their talent, making them local heroes. Now they don't. They pay meagre wages, hire cheap, boring talent [just listen to radio, watch local TV in this country, it pretty much sucks right across the board] and wonder why they have trouble making beaucoup d'argent.
The contrast is there with these two talents. Mr. Lye hasn't worked for about 20 years in this market and will be missed; Mr. Boyle hasn't worked in this market for about 20 hours and won't. The reason is simple. Both were commodities but Mr. Lye was treated as a commodity that could be a longterm profit centre; Mr. Boyle was not.

318...MP's Are Going To Make The CRTC Decide
What to do to save local TV.
I mean "save" local TV.
Jennifer Ditchburn writes that "The Canadian Press has learned that a majority report by the House of Commons heritage committee, to be tabled Friday, makes no recommendation about whether broadcasters should be able to charge cable companies for carrying their signals, referred to as 'fee for carriage.'''
My stand is that the CRTC should take a close look at the American model which only allows local channels on the cable systems in the community that they serve. As it stands now I get, and I like this, don't get me wrong, network affiliates from the Atlantic to the Pacific and back. What CTV, CBC, E! et. al. are doing is cannibalizing the industry. In my town, Ottawa, we have 16 over the air channels but virtually all of them are repeaters of Toronto signals. If CITY, TVO, Global and on and on want to have a presence in the Ottawa-Gatineau market that is great but they should have a local operation running local news, programming and so on. It gets worse in markets like London, Kitchener, Sudbury, North Bay, Thunder Bay and and and and.
TV tells stories. Watch local American stations and you will get a feel for the community that the station is intended to serve through its programming and the fact that it offers local business advertising at reasonable rates. When watching Canadian TV note that most of the advertising, even on local stations, is for national or regional stores and product lines.
It is time to save and enhance local TV, create jobs and although it is difficult for us to admit that the damn Yankees do stuff right, the Americans do do local media, including TV, better than we do, in small and big markets.

236...Tony Awards, Last Night
On CBS. Or may be NBC. Perhaps FOX. Definitely not on ABC coz that is where Kobe was.
You missed it too? Thought so.
When you break it down, the Tony Awards are a throw back to the olden days of TV, like really olden, 1940's, 1950's, when TV, American TV, was a reflection of New York City[and later, Los Angeles] popular culture to those in the hinterlands.
Canadian TV is still in that stage, reflecting, on English TV, Toronto or a Toronto centric view of the Canada, to those in the hinterlands; for French TV substitute Montreal for Toronto.
Breaking out of that construct is key.

230...Bring A Gun To Church Day Follow Up
Post 217 alluded to the fact that Bring Your Gun To Church Day is coming fast.
The date has been fixed for the big day at New Bethel Church in Wilmington, Kentucky. It will be the last Saturday of June, the 27th.
The genius behind this event, safety first by the way, no loaded guns and no concealed guns, is Pastor Ken Pagnano. I first heard of this story when cruising Louisville, Kentucky TV station, WAVE3's website and was amazed both by the story and by Pastor Pagnano's shrewd reasoning regarding the event. He says that it is not about a show of arms but a show of love for the United States Constitution, especially the Second Amendment.
Proving that he is not only about guns, Pastor Pagano is encouraging church members to bring a canned good and a friend to the event. He said guns must be unloaded for insurance purposes and safety reasons. Again the point was not to mix worship with guns. "Firearms can be evil and they can be useful," he said. "We're just trying to promote responsible gun ownership and gun safety." And collect food for the poor.

The NBA finals start this week and it is Kobe Bryant, arguably the best player on the planet [and without question the best Italian speaking player on the planet] versus Dwight Howard, who may have the broadest shoulders on the planet.
Lakers/Orlando.

131...Shouldn't They Be Paying Rogers/Shaw Etc?
The TV stations that is.
If you have been watching the box, CTV/AChannel have a concerted effort to make cable companies pay to carry them. Which, of course will mean you and I will have to pick up the tab coz, dead or not, Uncle Ted Rogers is going to pass the cost on to me. Ditto Mr. Shaw and Mr. Cogeco.
But, but, buttttttttttttttttttttt, here is what the World Famous Dan Shields doesn't understand. Isn't TV just advertising surrounded by programming? And isn't the more households that have access to your station, your programs and your ads the better?
Doesn't it follow that the cable companies are giving channels like A and CTV the opportunity to reach more households and therefore increase their audience?
Just asking.
Don't hate on me.

11...February 11, 2009
OMG, my heart nearly stopped the other day when the world started spinning backwards.
Number 13, A-Rod, Alex Rodriquez, infielder for the New York Yankees, the finest baseball player of his generation, has admitted to using steriods.
They news flashed this on, well, all the stations and web sites that have news flashes.
What next?
Strippers with breast implants?
Really, where is the news story there?
[Not in the stripper thing; that is a story I am personally in the midst of researching, important work.]
Let us be realistic, if they, whomever they are, started real testing for steroids in college and professional sports the dymamic of the game would change.
And that ain't good for TV and TV is the tail that is totally wagging the dog.
By the way, I like the dog.
