1707...Democracy? In Calgary West? Are U Well?

National Post this morning had a piece by Don Martin that opened thus:

Rob Anders has done it again. An MP widely considered invisible at best,
and horrible at worst, has been saved from local rejection after party
headquarters denied his own riding directors the chance to shop for a better
Conservative candidate.

The local executive wanted to have an open nomination for this uber safe seat, formerly represented by Reform Party [who's dat?] Member of Parliament Stephen Harper, who left the seat to pursue a career in the National Hockey League.

Open nomination? Ottawa was not having any of that. The Ottawa branch of the Tories that is. Sure "Local sentiment is clearly against Mr. Anders as their preferred candidate." In fact "No other Conservative MP had a nonpartisan website dedicated to defeating them in the last vote..." Y'would think the Tories, being democrats and all [chill, small 'd', not comparing y'all to the Democrats] would be in favour of an open nomination.

Afraid not.

"'Rob is a true reformer and a true conservative," Mr. Harper declared after saving his candidate from a challenge two years ago.'" As Yogi Berra has said previously "It is deja vu all over again."

In fact "...last weekend it [the central party apparatus; sounds rather draconian] seized control of local membership lists, the cash box and the power to call an annual general meeting, shutting down a volunteer association elected last March by Conservatives at large."

Turning on their own.

How People's Democratic Republican of the Tories.

Next thing they will be suspending Parliament.
