Don't know how I missed this one.
A week ago 65 guinea pigs at the Edmonton Valley Zoo were found dead Wednesday morning after eating what appears to be poison-laced oranges.
"This is a very serious matter. And while the cause of death is still being determined, the fact that many of these died almost simultaneously is certainly suspicious," said Dean Treichel, the zoo's operations supervisor quoted by the Edmonton Sun.
The animals were "...alive and healthy..." when zookeepers checked on them before the zoo closed Tuesday, Mr. Treichel said, adding security patrolled the site throughout the night.
But the following morning, staff discovered 64 guinea pigs lying dead throughout the outdoor enclosure, with one dying later in the day. A red squirrel that wasn't a zoo resident was also found dead outside the pen.
Only seven guinea pigs survived and are believed not to have ingested any of the poisoned food.
That be crazy.
