2566...CFL Coming Back To Ottawa: Probably

I received a timely comment on that matter, signed nonetheless:

And the CFL team will last a few years in Ottawa, in a ridiculous location where people don't like to go and traffic is terrible. And then it will fold and we will have a huge stadium on prime real estate, that will sit for years until it starts to break down and has to be torn down.

Respectfully I disagree with you and agree with you too.

I agree that the location is kind of f'cked but the idea of a city stadium is cool; the chaos is part of the fun of going. Case in point, McGill Stadium in Montreal.

As for the team, well, the Riders/Renegades did not have a winning season since the Gerald Ford era. That is like forever without winning. They win, they draw.

The key is to keep Joe Pao Pao away from the franchise.

  1. You are wrong about Pao Pao. They should hire him as a consultant and do the opposite of everything he says.

  2. Once again, the only internet fame that I am able to garner is when Dan is gracious enough to quote me.

I have been to a number of intercity stadiums in the US and Europe but they almost all have A; a greater radius of space and parking around them, and B; exist in cities where public transportation is more widely used, and C; have a greater concentration of urban residents around them who are likely to attend the stadium events.

I have never been to one as traffic impaired as Landsdown, with essentially only one road servicing the location because of its location on the canal.

There are, a number of large stadiums in London UK, for example and all of them that I can think of are accessible by four or five good, large roads.

As for the team, I just don't think this city will support a CFL team particularly in that location. I think if you had a larger versatile stadium in the suburbs then maybe they could make it.

I predict that ten years from now we will have another stadium at landsdown with no team and no use for it. We will see (if we are lucky enough to live that long) and if I am wrong, then I tip my hat now.
