893...Speaking Of Heat

The Canadian Press' Murray Brewster passes along the news that the next Prime Minister is making Jack Layton squirm. The heat was turned up on the Dippers yesterday when Mikey I declared that they'll soon have to make a choice whether they are true believers in Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the minority Conservative government.

Principles or pensions is the question at the New Democratic Party's federal caucus meets these days.

The NDP spin is that "Instead of playing games, Mr. Ignatieff should look at his record," these words emerging from the mouth of spokesman Karl Belanger Sunday. "He propped up Stephen Harper for 79 confidence votes in a row and got nothing in return. The NDP is making Parliament work, trying to get a billion dollars to help the unemployed."

681...New Democrats Still New

Showing their consistency in not making decisions the New Democratic Party, a 48 year old political party by the way so not exactly New as in New, did not even get around to discussing a name change.

Various sources are reporting on this story and all are consistent with the thought that there was a bit of stalling, filibustering going on at the convention held over the weekend in Halifax, stall tactics aimed at preventing the discussion of said name change.

674...Former Failed Leader Gives Advice To NDP

Ed Broadbent, who was a spectacular failure as a leader of the New Democratic Party, is now an elder statesman, eminent grise and all that of Canada's perennial fourth place national party. Mr. Broadbent gave a speech last night at the Dipper convention in Halifax that Michael Valpy of the Globe and Mail breathlessly reports was blah blah blah and blah.

Seriously, same old, same old.

Mr. Ed "...proclaimed the arrival of “a social democratic moment” in Canadian politics." in his speech.

Well, la di f'ing da. Where have I heard that before? Oh yeah, from you, Mr. Ed, repeatedly in the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000's.

Tax the rich, social equality and on and on and on.

Again proving that he and they don't get it the New Democratic Party, which very well could be the Democratic Party when you read this, will still get destroyed in the next election, picking up its usual handful of seats here and there and ultimately contributing next to nothing to Parliament.

Not even bronze medalists they are tired. So tired.

634...Olden NDP Disses Jack Layton

Reading the letters to the editor in this morning's Vancouver Sun, I came across this piece by old warrior Harry Greenwood from the worker's paradise of West Vancouver.

He is a wee bit cranky it seems. With good cause I may add.

Mr. Greenwood points out that he was at the original convention back in 1961 when the CCF, Canadian Commonwealth Federation, decided to change its name to the New Party under Hazen Argue or perhaps something with a socialist twang. As is wont to happen, during the convention the supporters of Mr. Argue moved to The Greatest Canadian Tommy Douglas and inserted Democratic into the New Party.

Their national vision was clear though, Tommy Douglas' "...proclaimed that when the economy was being debated, we should focus on health care and make sure it never strayed far from the table." Mr. Greenwood remarks that Jack Layton has lost that vision and that to debate a name change is merely an academic exercise. He rightfully says that "...the passion is gone..." I say "...a spent force..."

The passion is gone in the CCF/New Party/NDP. They have, on the national level, become the party of the chattering classes insulated in their West Vancouver, Glebe, Outremont bubbles.

A rose by any other name.

621...New Democratic Party = Democratic Party

The New Democratic Party, which has been 1/the New Democratic Party for 48 years and 2/not even close to forming a national government in its existence or 3/being in opposition, like, not even a silver f'ing medal, if one is to define loser on a national party level, step right up NDP.

Anyhow, they have a convention this month in Halifax, a good drinking town by the way, and they are giving serious thought, writes Lawrence Martin this morning, to dropping the "New" and becoming the Democratic Party.

You still cannot make a silk purse out of a pig's ear.

A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.

The NDP are still number 3. Except when they are number 4.

386...Jack Layton Done Like Dinner?

Now that JACK FM in Toronto is history the only Jack left in the Big Smoke is Jack Layton and if one is to believe what Richard J. Brennan wrote in this morning's Toronto Star, Jack2 is on his way out too.

By the way, you know, you know when they use an initial they mean business. If it was merely "Richard Brennan", okay, but "Richard J. Brennan" now we are talking some serious stuff.

I digress.

In a story headlined "Layton goes from kingmaker to bystander; Bubble has burst for NDP leader since coalition, and party has lost its momentum from 2008 vote" Mr. Brennan makes the point that when compared to Stephane Dion, Jack Layton was brilliant. When compared to the next Prime Minister of Canada, Michael Ignatieff, not so brilliant.

Support for the Dips was as high as 27 per cent during the fall election period; right now it is about 15 and that will translate into a lot of ex NDP MPs if it stays that way.

375...Stephen Harper

Future Calgary Realtor of the Year Stephen Harper says he is looking forward to working with the NDP in Nova Scotia.

Huh?

He was in Hali today and met with nova premier of New Scotland Darrell Dexter and, apparently, it was chillicious.

363...My Friend Steps Down

Personal friend of mine Penny Collenette has decided to not re seek the nomination for Ottawa Centre federally. This is being reported in the Ottawa Citizen online as we speak but I was aware of this, thanks to my sources [no I am not turning into Bourque!!!; that is how he spells his name, now, no?] around 2 pm this afternoon.

Mrs. Collenette was a brilliant candidate and would have continued to be such. Although displacing the heir to Ed Broadbent, Paul Dewar, the New Democrat representing Ottawa Centre on The Hill, if anyone was working hard enough to pull it off it was Penny.

She ain't dead though and said that she told the next Prime Minister of Canada, Mikey I. that "...he's not losing a candidate, he is gaining a fundraiser."

The only sad part of this story is that her husband, David Collenette, remains a Toronto Maple Leaf fan.

306...Win/Win For Mikey I.

At least that is what Steve Travers indicates in this morning's edition of the Toronto Star. Mr. Travers opines that, after all is said and done in Ottawa this week, Michael Ignatieff will either be on his way to being elected Prime Minister of Canada or, if the Conservatives/New Democrats/Bloc Quebecois blink, "...exorcises the Stephane Dion demon."

Four elections in five years is not something to be thrilled about for certain and a summer 2009 election will not bring in a majority government that is for certain, setting The Dominion up for yet another soon-to-come election, but no matter what happens, Mikey I. is going to come out of this smelling like a rose.

His time may not have come, but it is coming.

296...11 O'Clock This Morning Mikey I. Speaks

According to my morning Ottawa Citizen, the next Prime Minister of Canada, Michael Ignatieff, will most likely make an announcement as early as this morning whether Canadians can expect to head back to the polls, or if the Liberal Party will support the Conservative government's economic report.

Our current Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, future Calgary real estate salesman of the year, weighed in on the issue, telling reporters that Canadians don't want an election during a recession.

Inexplicably the Bloc Quebecois and the New Democratic Party want an election even though polls show that both parties will lose seats in a summer of 2009 vote.

A last point to consider is that the Members of Parliament that were elected in the June 2004 election don't get their pensions fully vested until they spend six years in Ottawa. This is no trifling manner; one has to think that the future personal security of the scores of MPs who came in in 2004 is in play as well.

293...Did Y' Hear About Harper's Town Hall Meeting?

It was Friday night in Cambridge.

Chris Charlton, the NDP MP from Hamilton, Ont., had the best take on Prime Minister Harper's invitation-only, mock town hall meeting in Cambridge, Ontario, which was hosted by unctuous TV-host-turned-Tory Senator Mike Duffy. Mr. Charlton said that the meeting "...had all the substance of a 30-second spot for ShamWows. [sic]''

Brilliant take.

292...Soon We Will Know

If the man who will be the next Prime Minister, Michael Ignatieff, will be triggering an election this week.

According to Bruce Cheadle's story in the Canadian Press both the Bloc Quebecois and the New Democratic Party will lose seats if an election happens this summer. The election will be the second we have faced in Canada in less than a year and it seems to me that even though the Bloc and the Dips will lose seats they are more concerned about losing face by not pushing for the demise of the Tories.

Putting the onus on Mikey I.

Stay tuned.

262...Drop The 'New' In NDP, Branding Expert Urges

That is the headline in the online edition of the National Post.

Alyn Edwards of Vancouver public relations firm Peak Communicators, says a name change would generate valuable publicity.

He didn't mention this, but for further success they should also drop the "Jack Layton" in NDP too.

193...Does Jack Layton Pull The Plug, V.2

On Parliament?

On Jack Layton's career as leader of the Dippers?

Chantal Hebert writes in this morning's New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal that there were more waiters than delegates at the NDP's general meeting in Montreal last month.

Jack has been talking breakthrough since he took over the leadership of the perennial also rans in 2003; winning Outremont does not, to moi, strike me as such.

Fish.

Cut bait.

Jack, it is time to, fish or cut bait.
