The Stephen Harper way.
Bea Vongdouangchanh drops a story in this day's Hill Times, a fish wrap that targets Hill workers and politicos in Ottawa, saying that in a few short weeks Prime Minister Harper, the man who preached the gospel of Senate reform and democracy will be stacking the chamber so as to achieve his goal of making a complete 180 on this issue. According to the story, the Tories will have the most seats of any party in the upper house come January and by this time next year will have a majority.
Brilliant.

Yes it is brilliant. It seems that the only way to reform the senate is from within.A trojan horse if you will.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous 11:09 is right. The only way reform in the Senate will occur is by appointing those who will change it.
ReplyDeleteThe Senate, being stacked with Liberals, has been the Liberals most effective stall tactic in the last 4 years. The Liberals hysteria over Conservative appointments springs from that fact rather than the entire logical decision to appoint new Senators who agree to limit their own terms and agree with senate reform to achieve that reform. The Liberal fuss about this is simply and only blatant hypocrisy. Reforming the system requires the Conservative Party to have the means to pass legislation that Liberals oppose for their own reasons, whatever they may really be.

ReplyDeleteGary, could you please provide us with examples of sitting Con senators demanding senate reform? I don't hear and fury, nor cries from the Con senators who have been at the tax teat for decades demanding reform.
This has been harper's desired goal--stack the senate that way progressive policies will never pass.
