Flirting is just like schmoozing which is just like lobbying.
In fact, when you deconstruct it, flirting is lobbying.
Step One: Check Your Ego
It is not about you. It is about her. Michelle Lia Lewis and Andrew Bryant, who wrote Flirting 101, point out the the point is to "...attract and hold other people's interest."
Step Two: Attitude Adjustment
The authors note that being hot or good with the mots is pointless if you have a bad 'tude. The five keys to success in lobbying are 1. Playful [lighthearted; teasing]. 2. Fun [witty; entertaining]. 3. Takes notice [being aware of the other person; interested]. 4. Loves people [gregarious; social]. 5. Goes for it [taking social risks; opportunistic].
Step Three: Start Talking.
Check your posture; make eye contact; start. With open ended questions. You know, stuff like "What do you think about...?" Make eye contact. And hold it just a tad longer than usual.
Step Four: Flatter
Your flirting partner will probably lob a query or two your way. Before you dive in with an answer lay on the charm with pre answers like "Wow, what a great question. What made you ask me that?" Then lay on a genuine compliment.
Step Five: Seal The Deal
If you are being well received get a little physical, touch an arm, take a step closer, sell yourself.
Follow the above and you too could be the next Rahim Jaffer. Or Hugh Hefner.
