2244...Those Who Can, Do

Those who can't, teach.

And, apparently, those who can't teach teach at Queen's.

Check out this ill thought out letter to the editor of the Globe and Mail by Professor Emeritus [that means old dude who has retired and now just goes to the school to use the gym, bathroom and bar] Hugh Thorburn of Queen's.

To turn the office of the governor-general into a popularly elected one is to radically change our system of government. In effect, it creates a replica of the U.S. presidency, and alters our system of government into one of separation of powers: executive versus legislature. An elected governor-general would have a mandate equal to, or maybe even superior to, that of Parliament. We would then have a system prone to deadlock and conflict.

When added to the penchant toward minority parliaments, we would make the country virtually ungovernable. This would surely revive the appeal of the Quebec separatists, and with good reason this time.

Let us hope that Prime Minister Stephen Harper does not go down that road. He could do what two of his predecessors did, and appoint a retired Speaker of the Commons. House Speaker Peter Milliken has just rendered a widely praised judgment on the question of the supremacy of Parliament versus national security. He is an obvious choice.

Goodness, how slow are you buddy? An elected, or my plan, a lotto winning, Governor General doesn't have to have real power. You know, like now. She/he/it [yes, I am pandering to the G/Bi/T/S etc folks; looking forward to the parade btw]. Take a look at many other countries, Ireland, where the President is elected and essentially does the seal eating, ribbon cutting role of our G-G.

May be you were sick the day that part of the program was studied Professor Old Dude.

Well, at least Queen's has a good football team.
