2240...Another Poll

And to think that EKOS is accused of having a Liberal bias. All I can say is thank goodness for that.

In a cut and paste number from the CBC website I will show you the sad news from your fellow Canadians:

Support for the Conservatives is showing signs of growth, a new EKOS poll suggests.

The poll, released exclusively to CBC News on Thursday, asked Canadians whom they would vote for if a federal election were held tomorrow. The Tories garnered 33.1 per cent support, while 26.1 per cent of the respondents chose the Liberals.

The seven-point spread between the two parties is up from the five-point spread of last week. But for the 18th consecutive week, no party was able to significantly break the 33-point mark.

The NDP came in third with 16 per cent of support, followed by the Green Party (11.5 per cent), and the Bloc Québécois (10.2 per cent).

The poll also revealed a gender gap emerging for the Conservatives and the NDP. The Tories have historically appealed more to men than women, but that trend had been less prominent in recent months.

However, that gap appears to be re-asserting itself with a difference of almost 10 points between Conservative support among men (38 per cent) and women (28 per cent).

While the Liberals appeared to pick up support among women when the Tories lost ground among that group, there has been no real gender gap between Liberal support among men and women in recent months.

But the poll shows a dramatic difference in the gender groups for NDP support. The female support for the NDP is up to 19.1 per cent compared to support among men, which is at 12.9 per cent.

Results on the government's direction are generally on par with previous weeks. Canadians continue to be split on whether the government is moving in the right direction (42.1 per cent) or the wrong direction (44.9 per cent).

This is, in a word, nuts.

  1. Nuts? Only because you are a Liberal.

You would have to be living in a cave to not notice the world turmoil in the economy. By comparison Canada is an island of stability. So much so that even the Liberals won't spend any time bitching about it. Wafers, torture, bodybags but little about the economy. Canadians are not a stupid as you think.

  3. Well Gene aren't you clever. I do not speak for all. I am only trying to shed light as to why it is not nuts that the polls are where they are.

    Do you have a theory?

  4. Even the Liberals led into the "Adscam Election" (and that was the only real issue that election - no-one with a brain actually voted for Harper on the economy). Between elections, incumbents get all the attention, and all the news leads. He is the PM after all. It will be different in a 35 day election run.

What I would focus on is how high the governing party's support goes. If not vey high, they're in trouble. I have a good friend who's served as a Con campaign manager, and is in good with his buddys who are young MPs from Alberta. When we talked polls during the Chretien/Martin era, he would always state the same thing about how incumbents are more likely to lead between election cycles.

Liberals simply need to keep rolling out planks in the platform, and have a solid one ready by Fall. The "culture war" has been started by Harper/Reformers, and we can end it - with a focus on what we've been doing vis-a-vis women's rights, minority rights, and organic/sustainable/LOCAL farming ideas.
