1937...Bill Clinton Has A New Cause

Healthy movie snacks.

The Hollywood News tells that there's a push to make movie theater snacks more healthy. The paper
reports that Michael Lynton, CEO of Sony Pictures, announced that the Alliance for a Healthier Generation — an organization that includes former President Bill Clinton and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger — wants to meet with theater owners to “offer advice on how to change your menus in a way that makes sense for your audiences and your business.” He made the announcement at at ShoWest, the nation’s largest convention for the movie theater industry.
President Clinton, famous for jogging to McDonald's while in office, said he would like to see the movie industry follow in the footsteps of the beverage industry, which took voluntary steps to encourage healthier lifestyles. Mr. Clinton said that:

The Alliance brokered voluntary agreements with the beverage industry that resulted in an 88 percent decrease in beverage calories shipped to America’s schools in just a few years. We are eager to work with the movie theater industry to craft similar agreements to provide healthy concession options in movie theaters.

Good on him.

1936...Wire Fraud

With a twist.

WBBM 780 Chicago runs this AP story about "A former Massachusetts dentist is accused of placing paper clips instead of stainless steel posts inside the teeth of root canal patients while billing Medicaid for the more expensive parts. The state attorney general announced Tuesday that a grand jury indicted former Fall River dentist Michael Clair last week. The charges include assault and battery, larceny, submitting false claims to Medicaid and illegally prescribing drugs."

Beauty, eh?

1935... I Bet They Are Great At Packing

They being Alison and David Phillips. They are a peripatetic couple from Merry Olde and The Sun, the British version, reports that they have just bought a home. After moving 86; that is eighty plus six; times since meeting in 1974.

"Mum-of-one Alison, 54, said: 'We never planned life like this - it just kind of happened.'"

Happen it did. During their travels the pair ran pubs and restaurants and have lived in flats, caravans, pubs, guesthouses, a mobile home, boats and even in a Renault.

Alison and David, 67, have been at their present home in Brixham, Devon, for seven years - the longest they have stayed in one place - so their daughter, 15, could stay at one school.

1934...More Stuff To Piss Off PETA

First Canada increases the seal kill by 50K and now this.

It's the Mike Tyson Show!

The Washington Post says that "Animal Planet, the cable network that says it's the destination for animal lovers, has purchased a new TV series in which it will introduce Mike Tyson, the heavyweight pugilist and avid pigeon fan, to the competitive world of pigeon racing."

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, PETA, objects saying pigeon racing is like dog fighting, except without the dogs or the fighting.

Because they still exist I presume Mr. Tyson was not in the room when PETA made that dubious claim.

Taking on Tyson will start filming this spring in New York City and will debut on Animal Planet in early 2011.

1933...Now We Can Have Seal For Dinner Too

I want to thank Gail Shea, the federal minister for fish and other watery critters, for, as reported in the Globe and Mail, increasing the seal cull by 50,000.

First off, anything that pisses off PETA and their whiny supporters gives me joy.

Secondly, the menu at McDick's is getting same-old, same-old.

Fingers crossed.

1932...Mullet Place

So I am sipping my Tim's and leafing through this morning's Green Bay Press Gazette and I come upon this headline:

Green Bay's most stolen street sign? Mullet place

"The most frequently stolen street sign in Green Bay isn't Lombardi Avenue, Reggie White Way or Brett Favre Pass...Mullet Place has disappeared so many times city crews have moved it higher on the street pole and out of reach. "

1931...Well, He Did Take Too Long

Yesterday's Toronto Sun had a piece about a guy at a Tim Horton's who had the wife and kids in the car and took too long to order in the drive thru Saturday morning so he got dummied by three strapping young men in the car behind him.

"Police spokesman Dave Selby said the incident report didn’t indicate how long the man had taken to order, what he was trying to purchase or whether he ever got his Tims."

I am of two minds on this; I don't spend a lot of time in drive thrus but I do go to bank machines and have often got behind folks who think that 10 30 Friday night in the bar district is a good time to pay three months worth of bills and renegotiate their mortgage while good citizens like me are getting beer money.
