On the way to a memorial service for the 70th anniversary of the 1940 Katyn Forest massacre, where Soviet secret police killed thousands of Poles in an attempt to kill the elites of that country, the present layer of elites in Poland were killed in a plane crash.
It is widely reported that Polish President Lech Kaczynski is dead, along with his wife, the head of the Polish central bank and various other senior government officials, after the plane they were travelling in crashed today in western Russia.
The Polish Foreign Ministry said that on board were the army chief of staff, national bank president, deputy foreign minister, army chaplain, head of the National Security Office, deputy parliament speaker, civil rights commissioner and at least two presidential aides and three lawmakers.
The plane they were in, the TU-154, has been, according to the Aviation Safety Network, in 66 crashes, including six in the past five years. The Russian carrier Aeroflot, not known for its safety record, recently withdrew its Tu-154 fleet from service.
