The University of Georgia in Athens, GA nicknames its sports teams The Bulldogs and, as is their way, they have an actual bulldog, a live bulldog, as their mascot. His name is Uga [University of Georgia, get it?] and he is part of a lineage that dates back to 1956.
We are up to Uga VIII right now, what with the sudden passing of Uga VII last month. Number VIII has not been selected and my dear friends at PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, were mentioned in the December 7th, 2009 edition of Sports Illustrated as having asked the University of Georgia to use a robotic dog instead of a live dog as their mascot.
As if.
By the way, if one is to be a dog, being Uga is a pretty amazing life. The bulldog travels in an air conditioned dog house and sits on bags of ice at games, as the breed is susceptible to heat stroke, a big concern in the Deep South. It eats rather well too.
Pick another hill to die on, PETA.
