1557...The Count Passes

From Canwest News Services:

Jean Charpentier, known to reporters as "The Count" because of his elegance and bearing, served as press secretary to prime minister Pierre Trudeau in the mid-1970s. Mr. Charpentier, who was 74, died on Friday after a protracted battle with cancer. Mr. Charpentier carried out his job as press secretary with style and substance at a time when relations between the media and the Prime Minister's Office were in stormy transition. He was "an amazingly elegant man," and "worldly," said Patrick Gossage, assistant press secretary to Trudeau at the time. Before joining the PMO, Mr. Charpentier had been a Radio Canada TV correspondent with postings in Toronto, London, Lima, Peru and Paris.
