Way, way, waaaaaaaaaaay up north.
In a move applauded by environmentalists such as Chris Debicki, Nunavut director for Oceans North, our government has planted a flag in Lancaster Sound with is so far north if you go any more north, you will be going south.
The Globe and Mail reports that "Parks Canada has begun a $5-million feasibility study in co-operation with the Government of Nunavut and the Qikiqtani Inuit Association to determine whether establishing a marine park would help protect the fragile environment of the region."
The Inuit have wanted the conservation area for decades and with the melting of the ice up there and the fact that the Yanks and the Rooskies are saying that our Arctic is actually international waters, it is time for the Canuck guv to act. Act they have.
It is a winner of an idea. Making Lancaster Sound a marine conservation area would still allow shipping through the passage, but would prevent waste dumping, mining and oil and gas development.
Good move by Jim Prentice and his crew.
