He made that point this morning too, indicating that the HST, Harmonized Sales Tax, is regressive, my words, not progressive.
Personally I think that the problem with sales taxes is that there are too many exemptions. In my view there should be zero exemptions which, presumably, would lead to a lower sales tax and less bureaucracy. Also, facts is facts, the more money a person makes the more money a person spends/consumes.
Anyhow, as reported yesterday by the Canadian Press "The HST appears to be a done deal for Ontario - and a big step closer to reality for British Columbia. The House of Commons voted 253-37 Wednesday in favour of a harmonized sales tax for the two provinces. The Conservatives, Liberals and Bloc Quebecois supported the controversial measure, while the NDP opposed it. Just hours earlier, the Ontario legislature passed its own legislation and B.C. is expected to follow suit early in the new year."
