The Canadian Press reports tonight that Montreal Papineau Liberal Member of Parliament Justin Trudeau is weighing in on behalf of a Montreal-based Pakistani couple facing deportation.
According to the Immigration Department, Sabir Mohammed Sheikh and his wife Seema have got to go and go now but they can leave their four children in Montreal until the kids refugee status is reviewed.
This seems kind of gross and Mr. Trudeau has written a letter to Immigration Minister Jason Kenney saying the removal of the parents would be devastating to the family, imploring Minister Kenney to get involved and review the situation.
There is some serious stuff going on though, this is not an easy file and the fate of the entire family rests on a pending judicial review of a 2007 decision to revoke their refugee status because they lied on their application about living in Dubai after leaving Pakistan.
The family have acknowledged their mistake and are appealing on humanitarian grounds.
Which ever way it goes, the family is fortunate to have a great MP like Mr. Trudeau.
