The story out of the Winnipeg Free Press is an old one: Aboriginals are disportionately represented in the prison systems of our home and native land. Almost one in five inmates is native; only one in twenty five Canadians are native. Disportionate to say the least.
What to do?
Manitoba NDP MP Pat Martin said Ottawa has to also stop thinking it can solve crime problems by locking more people up for longer. "When your only focus is on punishment, you deliberately ignore the social conditions of aboriginal people. More jail cells just means bigger con colleges."
Let me translate: poor people f#@k up more than the middle class and cannot afford good representation when they do. Dat is dat. Stephen Harper is going to make Canada like a lot of American states, say Michigan, where they spend more on jails that on schools.
