665...I Need Ratings For My Radio Show

Perhaps I should kill someone.

That is what former cop Wallace Souza did on his Canal Livre show in Brazil.

Mr. Souza a former policeman who built a political career as the scourge of crime, would feature the killings on Canal Livre show. He had an uncanny knack for being the first on the scene, gathering graphic footage of the victims. Mr. Souza says it was good journalism. The police who are investigating the TV host on suspicion of commissioning at least five murders to give his show a ratings lift, say its success was too good to be true.

Daily News and Analysis reports that Mr. Souza started Canal Livre two years ago on a local commercial station in Manaus, the capital of Brazil's largely lawless Amazonas state. The show featured him in studio railing against rampant crime in the state, punctuated with often exclusive footage of arrests, crime scenes and drug seizures. His crews were often first on the scene. The police say it is because Mr. Souza and his team were behind many of the crimes; he says it is because he is a diligent reporter.

The police investigation, which so far has in a raid on the TV host's house uncovered a number of guns and assault rifles and more than $100,000 in cash, continues.

Ratings through the roof.
