Much to my amazement Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Jason Kenney and The World Famous Dan Shields agree on an issue. In March the Honourable Minister publicly called the army
deserters "bogus refugee claimants.''
I concur.
What brings this issue to the fore is a story in this morning's Canwest newspapers that tells me that "The Federal Court of Canada on Tuesday granted Kimberly Rivera a new pre- removal risk assessment after Federal Court Judge James Russell ruled in favour of a review of her risk of punishment if she returns to the U.S." Mrs. Rivera, who lives in Toronto now with her three young children and her husband, was a member of the U.S. miltary, she joined freely and then was shocked and dismayed when she found out that volunteering for the military during wartime meant she would have to do war stuff. Like go to Iraq. Which she did but did not like. Poor baby.
On the record I want to say that my family tradition is to avoid war at all costs and I think that our country should be a safe haven for war resisters and evaders of service but I also think that individuals like Mrs. Rivera who join the military because they need a job should look at the job description first. It is a job description that includes extensive travel to places one does not want to go to such as Iraq and which also includes fighting in a f'ing war, that's why they taught you to shoot a gun Mrs. R and when you get asked to do what they are trained for, well that is what you signed up for.
Mrs. Rivera says that "Our families shouldn't be broken up, with a mother or father thrown in jail because they stood up for what's right.'' Hey, honestly, give your head a f'ing shake; what did you think you were joining the American war machine for?
