While the economy collapses all around us in Our Home and Native Land, the Conservatives, lead by Prime Minister Steven Harper, are planning on eliminating the faint hope clause that allows convicted murders to get out of jail a bit early.
Let's review.
The collapse of the economy affects everyone.
This faint hope clause, well, according to the John Howard Society, six people a year get out under the clause.
Ratio is 5.7 million people directly affected by the economy to 1 people directly affected by the faint hope clause.
At least your priorities are in the right place Mr. Harper.
We know why the Tories spend time on repealing laws like this, introducing mandatory sentencing laws for picayune offences such as pot possession: it plays well on Main Street.
It sounds good. Problem with these efforts are many, for starters, the economy is messed up, fix that and you mitigate a lot of criminal activity. Secondly, as the American model has shown, heavy sentences just lead to more crime, not less.
Word of advice: create jobs, stop pandering to your base and create frigging jobs.
