944...Moose Troubles Out West

The Moose in Manitoba potentially have a big problem.

Crestwood's own Mia Rabson, who scribbles for the Winnipeg Free Press, writes in today's fish wrap that "The Manitoba Moose are among the professional sports teams who could find themselves grounded because a recent decision to solve a cross- border charter airline dispute only applies to Air Canada and teams in the National Hockey League."

The Moose are the defending whatever-division-they-play-in-champions and Calder Cup finalists in the American Hockey League and are, next to ice fishing on Lake Winnipeg of course, the place to be seen in the Winnipeg area during the winter months, September to June inclusive.

This Air Canada only rule could also affect other Canuckistanian sports teams, specifically the Toronto Raptors and the Blue Jays.

Joe Volpe, who is the Liberal transport critic was spot on when he said the government was deceptive when it flaunted the NHL/Air Canada agreement during Harper's meeting with President Barack Obama Sept. 16 because they made it seem like they had solved the whole problem not just part of the problem.

Imagine, the current government being deceptive.

As if.

845...The Great One Takes A Break

Rob Longley in the Sun newspapers Sunday reports that Wayne Gretzky is taking a bit of break from coaching the Phoenix Coyotes, a team in tremendous flux, much of it coming from the pressure Jim Balsillie and the bankruptcy courts are putting on the club.

Not only is 99 the coach of the club, he is also a managing partner of the Coyotes and is paid about eight million a year. In bankruptcy court Friday the NHL admitted that they are trying to take over the team and trying to negotiate off that number.

General Manager Don Maloney is quoted as saying the true Canadian Idol "...thought it was better to sit back for a few days and evaluate the situation."

Interestingly this story is getting bigger play in Ottawa, Winnipeg, Halifax than in Phoenix. That should tell Gary Bettman something. It won't, but it should.

751...I Told You It Was The Weather In Post 747

That was the post about Gary Doer resigning as Premier of Manitoba. In Post 746 I said that he dug the job just was sick of winter in Winnipeg.

His new job is also in a northern town but in a town that is the most northernmost city in the American South. He is the new ambassador to the United States capital of which is Washington, D.C. where the average winter temperature is pretty warm for a Canadian boy.

Our beloved Prime Minister Stephen Harper named him to the job, which includes a house, a car and no shovelling, less than a day after Mr. Doer hastily resigned his position as Premier.

You know what I think? I think that the PM offered Mr. Doer the job two days ago and told him he needed to be on page now. And that is what you think too.

511...You Say Tomato I Say Bulldozer

Check out page A4 of the Winnipeg Free Press today; Larry Kurch does two contradictory articles on the Tories home reno credit and yet they both make sense.

In one story, headlined "Many Unaware Of Home Renovation Tax Break" he points out that a federal home renovation tax credit, credit installed by the government earlier this year to juice up the small businesses that dominate the renovation industry, a credit worth as much as $1,350 to individual homeowners, is not as well known as one would think.

In another article, "Tax Credit Spurs Renos", on the same page, Mr. Kurch writes that the home reno business is booming in the Manitoba capital.

So, those that do know, know and are taking advantage.

Renovators and retailers say the federal government should do more to promote the tax credit, which is available for only the 2009 income tax year.

I say renovators and retailers should do more to promote the tax credit.

487...Winnipeg City Of Champions

Ten years in a row.

Taking the title yet again, it is Winnipeg, known to many as Winterpeg, is yet again the 7/Eleven Slurpee capital. Ross Romaniuk in the Winnipeg Sun tells me that for the tenth consecutive year the Manitoba capital leads the world in Slurpee consumption.

With the highest average number of Slurpees sold per store, Manitoba has taken top spot over runners-up Calgary and southwest Detroit. Manitoba's sales of Slurpees were 20% higher than Calgary.

221...Winnipeg, The Porn Capital of Manitoba

Porn is all they are talking about today in balmy Winnipeg where, by the way, there is a frost warning ce soir, par for the course in Winnipeg, I mean, cripes, it is only June. It is the big story, front page in the Winnipeg Free Press, lead on the radio and TV news in the 'peg. It combined with a nice little lawsuit.

Here be the dealy deal.

On one side of the docket is an amateur Winnipeg porn star, Oshean de St. Claire de Guise, and her videographer husband, insisting they've done nothing illegal by cruising local bars looking for subjects to star in and with them in prairie pornos.

On the other side is a pair of Winnipeg sheriff''s officers, the good folks that transport prisoners and the like, who say that they were tricked into acting in an hour long, give or take, porno flick dubbed The Grey Cup Blonde.

Lawyers have been summoned.

99...Buzz Words/Follow up to Post 98

Gary, the commish d'NHL, Bettman, throws around buzzwords like market size with great regularity without knowing what they mean.

Hamilton/Vaughn/Winnipeg/Quebec City/Saskatoon are all bigger markets than Phoenix/Washington/Nashville. Not in gross numbers, no, but Gary ain't selling Coke or Hondas, he is selling hockey and there are 10 times more hockey fans in Vaughn than in Phoenix.

Research, Gar', research.

If I can do it from my laptop on Elgin Street in Ottawa, you can do it too!!!

95...Stephen Harper Does Something Right

After all these years, I knew he had it in him.

Well, I didn't know, but pleasant surprises are pleasant.

The headline in the online version of the Ottawa Citizen says it all:

Harper supports another Canadian NHL franchise

Blackberry Jim Balsillie wants to buy the money pit that is the Phoenix Coyotes [formerly the Jets of Winnipeg] and move them to Southern Ontario. My guess would be either Hamilton, Kitchener or Vaughn, but anyhow, is smart idea.

Of course the NHL is famous for rejecting smart ideas because, well, because they are maroons.

In my opinion the NHL would be well served with another team in the Greater Toronto Area, a club in Kitchener and one in Hamilton. And I am right about this. Ain't gonna happen, but I am right.
