642...Being Fat Will Set You Free

Or at least let you smuggle a pistol into jail. The Houston Chronicle, and Houston is one of my fave cities, like Montreal it is a city where the unthinkable happens on a regular basis, reports that 500 pound George Vera, who was in the Harris County Jail for allegedly burning CDs and selling them, smuggled in a load 9mm pistol in the folds of his fat.

This all came to light when he inexplicably told a guard about his malfeasance.

The 25 year old was charged with possession of a firearm in a correctional facility.

619...This Is What Makes America Great

By great I mean scary and weird.

Real headline from yesterday's Houston Chronicle:

Texas will soon make sure that competent lawyers handle death-row appeals

What a country.

300...Texas Cop, Trained By RCMP Airport Team?

72 year old Kathryn Winkfein dared a deputy constable to shock her with a Taser. Bad idea.

Video released by Travis County Constable's Office shows Deputy Chris Bieze confronting Miss Winkfein after stopping her for speeding on May 11 just outside Austin, Texas. Images from a camera mounted in the deputy's car, see the link above from Austin's own MyFox7, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKohyVJYiEU&feature=related, shows Miss Winkfein cursing and challenging the deputy and even daring him to use the Taser on her. A really bad idea.

"You're going to shove me? You're going to shove a 72-year-old woman?" she yelled.

No, he is going to tase you. And then you will fall down.

Later on Miss Winkfein audaciously told Austin reporters that she did nothing to provoke the use of the Taser. And, except for daring Deputy Bieze to tase her, she didn't.

Still.

178...This Is Why We Need The CFL In Ottawa

Matt Dominguez.

Never heard of him? That's okay, he has never heard of you.

Seriously, he is a Texas boy who ended up in Regina playing for the Saskatchewan Rough Riders of the Canadian Football League and now, his career in, best case scenario, its twilight, is continuing to live in the city that rhymes with fun working for a real estate company and living with his wife and two children in that town's north end.

Here is why you should care.

Men like Matt Dominguez bring a different flavour, the flavour of diversity, to markets like Regina, Saskatchewan. I think it is safe to posit that when growing up in Georgetown, Texas, Mr. Dominguez didn't know who, what or where Saskatchewan was. Now he is an important member of the community. What got him there? Professional football.

Flash to my town, Ottawa. If it wasn't for the Riders [may you rest in piece] we wouldn't have a Lone Star Restaurant, Local Heroes and a number of other things that give the city flavour. Ditto the 67s, Gatineau Olympiques and Senators.

That is why we need the CFL [and NHL, and the OHL and the QMJHL] in Ottawa.

Not at any cost; I subscribe to the Neil deMause's Field of Schemes philosophy, but we need 'em.

Just don't use public money [or as much public money] on the teams, ca va?
