In what has to be a highlight of his career, Dennis Bevington, whom you never heard of until this very second, has made The World Famous Dan Shields' blog.
For those of you who know Mr. Bevington, he needs no introduction. For those of you who don't know him, and I would think that includes everyone, he is the NDP MP for the Western Arctic.
Mr. Bevington is quoted this morning in the Hay City Hub [I told you that I read 'em all] as saying that Michael Ignatieff's remarks in Sudbury last week were "...irresponsible..." Mr. Bevington, who, by the way, like his leader Jack Layton, has a porn star moustache, goes on to say that if Stephen Harper is willing to make compromises his government will survive.
Let me translate all this bullsh't for you. Mr. Bevington has been an MP since 2006; he needs a few more years to get a pension. He has won the last two elections but not exactly by a landslide and he has no fall back plan, he needs this gig to feed himself. The last thing he needs is an election that he could very well lose.
That's it, that's all.

805...Ottawa Centre Liberal Nomination This Wed
It is Scott Bradley versus Janet Yale and, for what it is worth, Mr. Bradley just sent me a note informing me that former national Chief Phil Fontaine is endorsing him in this race.
Chief Fontaine, who is rumoured to be running for the Liberal Party somewhere west of Ottawa Centre in the near future, said that "I worked closely with Scott as he led the charge within his company to put aboriginal issues on the corporate agenda. His genuine commitment to Canada's aboriginal community reflects his commitment and passion to the community as a whole. Scott would be a tremendous advocate and champion for Ottawa Centre, and we would be fortunate to have him as our Member of Parliament" . [sic]
The nomination meeting is this Wednesday at the Albert Street Education Centre, 440 Albert Street in Ottawa Centre. Speeches start at 6 30 and the voting closes at 10. Look for moi in my Liberal red sombrero.

735...Elizabeth May Decides On A Riding
Influenced by the weather no doubt, Green Party leader Elizabeth May has decided to focus on Saanich-Gulf Islands, on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, as the place to plant her flag in the next election.
Andrew Potter in today's Ottawa Citizen senses a disconnect in the Green Party and his evidence of that is the actions of Stuart Hertzog, a man who has been in the party for over a quarter century, who is challenging Miss May for the nomination. He says that the party is becoming more undemocratic as the days progress. Mr. Potter makes the point that the Green Party is more effective in its present configuration as a super lobby group of sorts as opposed to being just another budgetary party.
The Green Party leader has the choice of picking any riding in the country and yet chooses this one. One of the things that I find odd about her choice of Saanich-Gulf Islands is the fact that the Green Party finished third with only 10.5 per cent of the vote last time out. After getting creamed at the polls by Peter McKay in Central Nova last time out one would think that she would want to have the most favourable conditions extant this time.
Or perhaps she really doesn't want to win? Which I find difficult to believe considering, among other things, she lives in Ottawa so being an MP would be a short bus ride, the 7, one bus all the way, to the office.
Still, a curious choice on many levels. One would think that her people would try to find her a seat where she could win the nomination without a struggle and then have a good shot at winning. Yet another thing that makes Saanich-Gulf Islands odd is the fact that it is not a media center and the fact that it is about as far west as one can be will only add to the travel burden for the leader of a national party.
It just doesn't make sense.

Daniel LeBlanc in this morning's Globe and Mail reports that Denis Coderre, the Quebec Member of Parliament for the Liberals, becomes a cultural icon/target this fall on the Radio-Canada [that is CBC's French TV, I know, why is it not TV Canada? Here's why, it is based in Montreal, where the South Shore is East of the City.] hit show Et Dieu créa … Laflaque. The show is an homage to the British program Spitting Image.
The program runs at 7:30 Sunday nights on RadCan and draws an average of 800,000 viewers.
The title is derived from the 1956 French film And God Created Woman starring Brigitte Bardot, with Mr. Laflaque being a fictional anchorman.
