584...Parking Fines Dilute Good Will

Cities everywhere don't seem to get that.

Here is a letter to the USA Today from Fargo, North Dakota, a smallish town, metro of about 200,000 thousand, size of Regina or Saskatoon give or take, where one would not think these things would be problems.

More parking fines dilute goodwill

Brian Magee - Fargo, N.D.

More parking fines dilute goodwill Cities increasing parking fines to boost revenue — and moves like it — alienate the public from their governments. Government should not be seen as an enemy. When it is, the result is bitterness and lack of respect ("Parking fines easy cash for cities," News, Wednesday).

Government's central functions should be paid for by everyone, on a sliding scale, giving each person a stake in what government does. When the basic budget is funded increasingly through fines, fees or targeted taxes, such as those on alcohol or cigarettes, we attach a negative connotation to government. Then the government becomesBold not an ally, but an adversary.

Fines should be an annoyance and a small deterrent, not a revenue source. It's not only bad policy, it's also bad psychology.

Please alert Lowell Green to this Post; this is one of his long time [and accurate] rants.

522...Elizabeth Payne On Global Warming

In an editorial in today's Ottawa Citizen, an editorial that skillfully uses the near death of Lake Erie 40 years ago as metaphor, Elizabeth Payne thoughtfully asks "What will it take to get some concrete action on global warming?"

The answer is simple yet out of control of science and scientists.

It has to get warm.

As in hot.

Ridiculously hot.

Not that I am being Lowell Greenesque and doubting that global warming is an issue but you did ask the question Miss Payne.

It is just hard to energize the common man, and none are more common than I, behind a cause that one cannot feel and in a summer in Ontario and Quebec where the temperatures have barely touched 20 let alone the 30's and near 40's of years gone by, it is difficult to believe that there is global warming.

Intellectually I know that there is global warming but when I am running my car heater in July in Ottawa it is hard to emotionally buy in.

Lake Erie had dead fish washing up on shore, the Cuyahoga River catching fire in Cleveland, great optics for television; global warming doesn't have that.

The issue has to be saleable. And it has to be localized.

The only question is, how?

462...It's Yer Birthday Part Two

It's Lowell Green's, 580 CFRA's talk show host, birthday.

He led off his show by alleging that one of the ZeroMeansZero blog spot writers is a known pedophile. Nice, unwarranted, shot.

Lowering yourself to their level.

Short trip, for certain but still...

Nice.

431...Animal News

In news that will make Lowell Green and the CFRA Nation happy, Tiffany Crawford and Peter O'Neil report in this morning's Montreal Gazette that the World Wildlife Federation ranks Canada eighth out of the eight countries that make up the G8 in terms of reacting to climate change.

"Nowhere else on Earth do fewer people steward more resources, yet Canada now stands dead last among the G8 nations in protecting our shared home from the threat of dangerous climate change," said foundation spokesman Keith Stewart.

The big bugaboo is the ongoing work in northern Alberta on exploiting the tarsands which has dire consequences for the environment according to the 2009 Climate Scorecard.

May be the Green Shift wasn't such a bad idea, eh?

429...Rednecks Of The World Unite Via CFRA

I'm driving in my car.

I turn on CFRA.

I am listening to Lowell Green.

And he gets a call from New South Wales, Australia.

From a lad who's neck is redder than Lowell's.

Twas sweet.

They did a little immigrant bashing.

Too much taxes, not enough services, damn minority gangs.

And then the lad told Mr. Green he was on his 20th beer and that were that.

202...If The Liberals Did That!!!

Left briefing papers lying around, under estimated the budget by a trillion or two, miscounted the power of gold, dated ex biker chicks, well, you get the picture, Lowell Green, Steve Madely and their ilk would have their panties in a knot.

161...Many Voices Make Us Stronger/ZMZ

Here is what I posted on ZeroMeansZero a few minutes ago.

World Famous Dan Shields said...
RE: CFRA and surrendering their lic.Um, doncha think multiple voices are better than no voice? Frankly, agree or not, CFRA is at least out there and, as Lowell has said in the past, it is suprising that some of the underperforming stations, ratings are out today, look to the bottom of the list, don't go talk, hot talk, etc. Also, 540, 630,970, 1440 and 1150 are still signals assigned to this market. If CFRA and CFGO/The Team can make money on AM, one would think that a talker on a flamethrowing signal like the one 540 has would make a few shekels.ZMZ Radio?WFDS

88...Gutless Wonders aka ZeroMeansZero

Ottawa Mayor Larry O'Brien's trial commenced yesterday, Monday May 4, 2009 and the gutless wonders that populate the blog ZeroMeansZero are wetting themselves with joy.

Of course none of them are signing anything with their real names.

These people are the biggest losers extant: at least the people whom they hate on, Mayor Larry, Lowell Green, Steve Madely and so on, have the integrity to sign their names to their work.

Embarrassments to the human race they are, embarrassments.
