1903...89-Yr Old Rides Bus 14 Miles 2 Cross Street

Sounds like something from The Onion butchya canna make up stuff like this.

It were in Shea Gunther's blog, she is an eco environmentalist which, uh, I dunno what that is exactly but it sure sounds series.

I digress.

Pulling info from the Daily Mail, Ms. Gunther, you know it has to be Ms. not Miss or Missus, reports "...that [Nancy Underwood][a]...grandmother-of-five [from Chideock, Dorset, England] takes four bus rides and travels a total of 14 miles just to visit the shops and post office across the street from her home because the traffic is too heavy for her to walk across. She's been doing it since moving there in 2005. A trip to a nearby town to visit other shops is capped by an extra eight miles of unnecessary bus rides just to get back on her side of the road."

My first thought was: buy a car but, hey, we really don't need a new 89 year old driver on the road do we, eh?

The local council is going to build a cross walk for her and others so as to pre empt the day long voyage across the street.

This is not unique to England; think of Decarie Blvd on the west side of Montreal or, as Ms. Gunther writes, other "...roads [that] were and are built without any thought given to pedestrians and bike riders. You can find it in Connecticut, New York, California, Texas, and dozens of other states. In the developing world traffic accidents between cars and pedestrians and bike riders are a well known problem."
