1882...New Announcer On ESPN

It's Nomar Garciaparra.

The whole world is reporting that he signed a one day contract with the Boston Red Sox today and then retired. The former first-round pick won batting titles in 1999 and 2000 and MVP in 1997; a six-time All-Star, he had a .313 career average with 229 homers and 936 RBI.

He was originally a member of the Red Sox and then was traded late in the season that they broke the Curse of the Bambino, 2004.

It is kind of odd that a 36 year old playing in his hometown of Los Angeles would hang 'em up but such is life. He has had a lot of injuries during his career so I suppose he is worn out.

He is married to American soccer great Mia Hamm and they have two kids.

He is not just a sports hero either: On October 8, 2005, Mr. Garciaparra and his uncle Victor Garciaparra were alerted to the screams of two women who had fallen into Boston Harbor outside his condominium. One of the women sustained injuries to her head after hitting the pier on her way in. Mr. Garciaparra quickly jumped into the harbor and saved both women, who were later taken to the hospital.

Amazing fellow, eh?
