1703...Paxil, Anxiety And Breast Cancer

Canwest News' Sharon Kirkey drops this story this morning that Paxil, the anti depressant drug that is commonly prescribed to women with breast cancer may in fact cancel the positive effect of the breast cancer drug Tamoxifen.

Dr. David Juurlink of Toronto is one of the author's of the study that was released this week in the British Medical Journal. Dr. Juurlink, who works at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences in Toronto, suggests that if you have breast cancer and depression you switch from Paxil to something else.

Not suprisingly getting breast cancer can and does contribute to depression in about a quarter of women diagnosed. Switching off Tamoxifen is a non starter; Dr. Juurlink says it is a Hall of Fame drug.
