We have a new champion: The BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has now exceeded the Exxon Valdez incident of thirty years ago and is only getting worse.
Yet, as the Old Gray Lady reports online this a.m., this is nothing compared to what has, is and continues to happen in Nigeria.
"Experts estimate that some 13 million barrels of oil have been spilt in the Niger Delta since oil exploration began in 1958. This is the equivalent of one Exxon Valdez every year for 50 years." Yet there is little or no coverage of this ongoing disaster in the Niger River Delta.
This is crazy stuff. I am not an expert or anything close to an environmentalist but this is nuts. "Dead fish and oily water are part of daily life for Niger Delta residents, as are gas flares. Some middle-aged Niger Delta residents have never had a night of total darkness...Oil companies operate in Nigeria with little or no oversight from the government. It must be noted that the government has part ownership in the subsidiaries of all the oil multinationals which operate in Nigeria."
San Antonio, Texas academic Anene Ejikeme continues in the Opinion piece in today's New York Times to tell that "Interviewed by one television station, BP CEO Tony Howard offered a hollow-sounding apology, then quickly added, 'I’d like my life back.' When big oil spills happen, ordinary people rarely get their lives back."
True that.

2439...Would The Esteemed Senator From South
Carolina shut the f*ck up.
That is you I am talking about State Senator Jake Knotts. On Pub Politics, which is a popular online political talk show in South Carolina's capital of Columbia, the esteemed Republican leader said that "...we already have one raghead in the White House, we don't need a raghead in the governor's mansion." Raghead number one would be Democratic Prez Barack Obama. Raghead number two is gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley, endorsed by Governor Palin, Governor Romney and pretty much everyone else on the right of right of the political spectrum. Clemson graduate, Go Tigers, Ms. Haley is the child of Sikh immigrants from the Punjab.
Senator Knotts inane comments puts him to the right of Sarah Palin. Where the f*ck is that?

2438...I'm Going To The Chapel
And he's going to get married.
He is Rush Limbaugh, iconic American talk show host. Think of Don Cherry in rocking a Holt Renfrew suit and talking about politics.
He is 59 and is set to marry 33-year-old girlfriend Kathryn Rogers on Saturday at the talk radio star's palatial Florida beachfront property. Like most pro family right wingers this is his manyeth marriage.
Mr. Limbaugh emailed a statement to his local paper, the Palm Beach Post. "We try to live our lives as normal people," he wrote. "We do NOT seek media attention, we do not want it, especially for this. It is very special, obviously, and we just don't want any media attention."
Dude, are you sh*tting me? You are on the f*cking radio a zillion hours a week from coast to coast to coast and now you are getting shy?
Still he is concerned with his immediate environment. To wit the happy couple, concerned about the well being of birds are asking wedding guests to refrain from throwing rice and request that they throw OxyContins instead.

2436...She's Going Down
But she is going down fighting.
She is the Honourable Helena Guergis, former Tory minister, now ostracized from the Stephen Harpers.
Twas in this mornings Times & Transcript, the fishwrap of record in New Brunswick's third most important city, Moncton, that yesterday the former Minister For Inappropriate behaviour stood up in the House of Commons and asked the 64,000 dollar question: why?
The answer, coming from John Baird, was the usual bafflegab.
By the way, Ms. Guergis and her husband Rahim Jaffer, a former Tory MP, are scheduled to testify together Wednesday at a Commons committee.
Should be fun.

2435...World War Two
The war that keeps giving.
The Daily Telegraph tells that a German bomb disposal unit was called to the scene in Goettingen Tuesday. Their job was to dismantle an American bomb left over from WWII, which construction workers had just found buried 24 feet below the ground.
Just an hour before experts were scheduled to dismantle the 1000-pound device, the bomb exploded. Sixty five years after the war the Allied bomb killed three and injured three others. Additionally the bomb was responsible for blowing the fronts off several houses.
This is a serious matter. The Daily Telegraph reports that over 2,000 tons of U.S and British aerial bombs are found each year in Germany. Hans-Juergen Weise, a former bomb disposal expert, explains that the danger posed by these bombs is increasing – as the decades-old detonators begin to rot with age. “One day,” he warns, “such bombs will be so sensitive that no one will be able to handle them.”
Thank you Adolf.

2434...Ed Broadbent Glasses Recalled
Have you ever noticed how the former Grand Pooba of the Dips looks a lot like Shrek the movie character?
Mea culpa.
It is Shrek glasses that BBC reports are being recalled by Mickey D's. 12 million of them. Their designs are tainted with cadmium, a toxic metal. Glasses were sold in the U.S. for about $2 each, showing four different designs from the animated film. McDonald’s said the move came “...out of an abundance of caution...” and that the glassware is “...safe for consumer use...” That would be what I call a mixed message.
A more credible source, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, has warned people to stop using them. Cadmium is nasty. It can damage the liver, kidneys, lungs, nervous system and brain. The glasses raised concerns about long-term exposure to low levels.
Ed Broadbent was not available for comment.
