5931...Tim Tebow And Justin Trudeau

Tim Tebow was cut by the New York Jets, the Super Bowl III champions.

For those of you who, horrors, are not football fans, all that Mr. Tebow did in high school was win.  All he did in college, Florida Gators, was win.  All he did his first year as a pro with Denver was win.  He wasn't given the opportunity to win with the winners of Super Bowl III [we are up around fifty or sixty by now, er, L or LX I meant] so they fired him.  Smooth.

Justin Trudeau is cut of the same cloth.  All he does is win.  The difference between the team he quarterbacks, The Big Red Machine, and the winners of Super Bowl III, is that Big Red is smart.  Win pretty, win ugly, just win.  Like in the good old days with King, Trudeau I and Jean Chretien.

That is why the Stephen Harpers are running scared.

5930...Rich Versus Poor

The Atlantic just published a piece that explains why rich people, specifically rich kid people, do better than poor people, specifically poor kid people.

It has a lot to do with money.

Which, unless you are a welfare bashing fiscal conservative who has convinced himself or Ann Coulter that the poor have all the money coz of welfare, the poor have little of.

5927...First Gay Male Pro Athlete Comes Out

Sure there have been a lot of gay women athletes, the most recent to come out being the best woman player of this era, Britney Griner ex of Baylor and now with the Phoenix Mercury.  Men that have come out have been few, retired, and none active.

Til today.

Sports Illustrated breaks with the story that Jason Collins, an 11 year journeyman centre in the NBA has come out.  "I'm a 34-year-old NBA center. I'm black. And I'm gay."  Tina Fey would call him a two-fer.  "I didn't set out to be the first openly gay athlete playing in a major American team sport. But since I am, I'm happy to start the conversation. I wish I wasn't the kid in the classroom raising his hand and saying, 'I'm different.' If I had my way, someone else would have already done this. Nobody has, which is why I'm raising my hand."

153856683
He played at Stanford with his brother Jarron Collins who is also an NBA vet.  Wait, Stanford?  That makes him a three-fer in Tina Fey speak.  "I didn't come out to my brother until last summer. His reaction to my breakfast revelation was radically different from Aunt Teri's. He was downright astounded. He never suspected. So much for twin telepathy. But by dinner that night, he was full of brotherly love. For the first time in our lives, he wanted to step in and protect me."

Now all Mr. Jason Collins has to worry about is the curse of Sports Illustrated.

5926...Don Cherry Says Something Un Intelligent

Again.

The National Post quotes the man as telling his cohort Ron McLean and the world these pearls of wisdom during the first intermission of CBC's Hockey Night In Canada:  “I don’t believe — and I really believe this — I don’t believe women should be allowed in the male dressing room,” Cherry said. “I — now, wait a minute — I remember the first time it happened to me. Guys are walking around naked and I hear this woman’s voice and I turn around and there’s a woman, and she’s asking me about the power play, and I say let’s go outside, and she said ‘I’m not embarrassed,’ and I said, ‘I’m embarrassed.’”

I am not surprised.  But the chattering classes are up in arms and calling for Don Cherry's head.

First off, if you favour diversity suck it up and turn the channel when Mr. Cherry comes on the Sony.  Secondly, how dumb are you?  You are so easy to manipulate.  The CBC's equivalent of Christmas shopping starts this week with the debut of the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs.  It is a cash cow, thee cash cow for the Mother Corp and you guys got it on the front page of every paper in Canada plus the hockey towns on the U. S. border.

If you don't think that the Don and Ron Show is scripted, loosely at least, you gotta give your head a beeg shake.

5923...Another Secret From Victoria

At least a secret to those of us east of Crowsnest Pass.  British Columbia is having an election.

Christy Clark by Kris Krug 05.jpg

The Liberals, under Chrissy Clark, have been in a majority since the turn of the century.  Alas it doesn't look good for them this time out.  The latest poll, done by Angus-Reed, has the party in power at 31, Adrian Dix's NDP at 45 and the Greens and Conservatives at 11 and 10.

Adrian Dix cropped.jpg

ThreeHundredEight.com has the Dippers getting a huge majority, the most probable numbers being 65-19.   What surprises moi is the fact that the Greens are predicted to get shut out.  I thought that this was their base of power.  Me musta thought wrong.

You know who did not know that?   Kylie Bisutti.  She is a 23 year old former "Victoria's Secret Angel [who quit] last year when she realized she was paid to titillate men."

Not one of the sharper knives in the drawer, is she?  But she is pretty.  She informed the New York Post that "I was being paid to strip down and pose provocatively to titillate men. It wasn't about modelling clothes anymore; I felt like a piece of meat... I realized I didn't want to model anything that sold sex."

Review.  She is a 5'10'' blonde, 34/24/34, in lingerie and it took her a number of years, y e a r s, to realize that she was being objectified.

Oy. And vey.

She has married and moved out to Montana, she is the only Italian in the state of by the way, and is eating whatever she wants.  "I no longer restrict what I eat. I weigh 124 pounds right now, but my ideal weight is 125. I want young girls to see me at a healthy size."

5921...Rita MacNeil’s death should make us angry‏

That is the headline over Andre Picard's story in the Globe and Mail yesterday.

The obese superstar died in a Cape Breton hospital later this month from an infection after a routine surgery. Apparently the hospital she was at, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, is the Wayne Gretzky of killing people.  Mr. Picard writes that "...the CBC program the fifth estate [sic] gave the Cape Breton Regional Hospital a D rating for its record on post-surgery mortality."  In fact “This hospital reports substantially more deaths after major surgery than the average hospital of the same size...”   Way more.  "...according to the ratings – 16.8 deaths per 1,000, almost double the national average of 8.6 deaths per 1,000."

Still you and other non Capers are not out of the woods; up to 12,000 Canuckistanians make it through the tough bits of surgery and end up dying of infection in hospital.  Per year.

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Often over-shadowed by Vancouver and Toronto in the street food arena, Ottawa boasts a growing mobile meal scene, with 44 food trucks and carts already hawking their yummy goods and about 20 inventive newcomers ready to hit the streets in May. New trucks include the Urban Cowboy, which will dish out self-proclaimed “innovative Texan street food” and the Ottawa “Streat” Gourmet set to feature local, seasonal eats. New specialty carts will serve everything from frozen yogurt to churros and baked potatoes with toppings. These additions will join the city’s perennial street food favorites like hot dog and sausage carts, BeaverTails (fried pastries with your choice of sweet or savory toppings) and poutine (french fries topped
with gravy and cheese curds).

The Guardian, a lovely progressive fish wrap from Manchester, England, points out that last year 17 Americans died in terrorist attacks.  30,000 Yankees got kilt by guns.

The Guardian goes on to note that "The same day of the marathon bombing in Boston, 11 Americans were murdered by guns. The pregnant Breshauna Jackson was killed in Dallas, allegedly by her boyfriend. In Richmond, California, James Tucker III was shot and killed while riding his bicycle – assailants unknown. Nigel Hardy, a 13-year-old boy in Palmdale, California, who was being bullied in school, took his own life. He used the gun that his father kept at home. And in Brooklyn, New York, an off-duty police officer used her department-issued Glock 9mm handgun to kill herself, her boyfriend and her one-year old child."

I am talking about the esteemed Senator Mike Duffy, Kanata.  Er, Prince Edward Island.  The man who took a housing allowance for living here when he lived there.  Or something like that.  Anyhow, the esteemed Senator cannot seem to get his sh*t straight.  The story now, as Kristy Kirkup wrote in my morning Kingston Whig-Standard, is that he "...said Friday he paid back the $90,172.24 associated with his Ottawa housing."  In March.

This begs the question:  if he paid back the money in March, why did he not tell Global TV that in an interview conducted in April?  In fact the esteemed Senator "...came under fire in the House of Commons earlier Friday for suggesting to Global News he hadn't actually paid back questionable living expenses despite promising to do so.  'We haven't heard from(auditing firm) Deloitte,' Duffy told Global. 'If repayment is required, it will be repaid.'"

My suggestion is perhaps the esteemed Senator was either over refreshed or recovering from a bout of over refreshing when he made one of the above statements.  As those in the know know the esteemed Senator has a great fondness for plants that are fermented and liquefied.

5881...Everybody Is Talking About Canada

My real world buddy, Facebook pal and assistant coach for the Maine Black Bears Nate Phillippe drops this knowledge on us.

“Everybody in the world is talking about Canada…outside of the US, there is probably no country in the world that is producing more blue-chip young basketball talent than Canada.” ~George Raveling

Those of us who follow the game have figured out that the great influx of kids from East Africa, i.e. The Sudan, Somalia, Kenya and Uganda, is coming to fruition.  When they came over in the early 1990s you had a bunch of kids who needed something to do.  They and their families had no strong ties to hockey, baseball, football.  The two natural sports to play were soccer and hoop.  Plus they were athletes, in the case of the Sudanese, big f*cking athletes.  They helped push kids who had been in Canada for generations to play better.  The result is that Canada, specifically the GTA, is now for real.

5879... A White American, Let’s Hope The Boston Marathon Bomber Is

That is the headline that Salon, it is on online newsmag, dropped on Tuesday.

The thesis that Salon follows is in the sub headline:

                                                           There is a double standard:
White terrorists are dealt with as lone wolves,
Islamists are existential threats
David Sirota, the writer of the piece, goes on to quote Tim Wise who writes that “White privilege is knowing that even if the bomber turns out to be white, no one will call for your group to be profiled as terrorists as a result, subjected to special screening or threatened with deportation...White privilege is knowing that if this bomber turns out to be white, the United States government will not bomb whatever corn field or mountain town or stale suburb from which said bomber came, just to ensure that others like him or her don’t get any ideas. And if he turns out to be a member of the Irish Republican Army we won’t bomb Dublin. And if he’s an Italian-American Catholic we won’t bomb the Vatican.”

Mr. Sirota goes on to keyboard that "If recent history is any guide, if the bomber ends up being a white anti-government extremist, white privilege will likely mean the attack is portrayed as just an isolated incident — one that has no bearing on any larger policy debates. Put another way, white privilege will work to not only insulate whites from collective blame, but also to insulate the political debate from any fallout from the attack..."

A darker shade of pale will be not the same by a longshot according to Mr. Sirota:  "It will probably be much different if the bomber ends up being a Muslim and/or a foreigner from the developing world. As we know from our own history, when those kind of individuals break laws in such a high-profile way, America often cites them as both proof that entire demographic groups must be targeted, and that therefore a more systemic response is warranted. At that point, it’s easy to imagine conservatives citing Boston as a reason to block immigration reform defense spending cuts and the Afghan War withdrawal and to further expand surveillance and other encroachments on civil liberties."

Racism rears its ugly head yet again.

This I gotta see.  Which, I presume, is the point.

My buddy Len Berman from Len Berman's That's Sports drops this knowledge on me which I pass on to you:

According to reports the NHL, in addition to the Outdoor Classic between Detroit and Toronto at Michigan Stadium New Year's Day, is planning 5 additional outdoor games next season including games at Yankee Stadium (2 during Super Bowl week), Dodger Stadium and Soldier Field, Chicago.

I think the NHL is finally getting this marketing thing.   Now all they have to do is figure out what roads lead from Phoenix to Canada.

5869...Tomorrow In Your Sun Marijuana News

As you know Hitler's birthday is coming up and we all know what that means.   Call centre employees, high school drop outs and fast food workers play hooky and roll up onto Parliament Hill to smoke dope under the noses of the RCMP and parliamentarians.

As you also know this celebration, 420, does zero to further the legalization of pot; in my view it retards it coz it reinforces conservative [and Conservative] stereotypes of pot smokers.  The movement needs its Rosa Parks.  And she ain't gonna smell of pitruli oil.

But I am looking forward to a piece that Anthony Furey of the Suns was promoing on 580 CFRA's The Lunch Bunch today.  Apparently he is writing a wee piece where he asks why.  Why the Conservatives in Ottawa are against legalizing it.  Why they have brought in inane and insane minimum sentences.  Why can't you grow it with your tomatoes and zucchini in the backyard this summer.

If you need the 50 cents put it on my tab, k?

5861..."Alcohol May Have Been A Factor"

Mixed with guns of course.

From Deadspin and USA Today via Gawker and Russell Barth's News Aggregator comes this:

Man Shoots Himself in Head at NRA-Sponsored NASCAR Event

Three months after Gun Appreciation Day resulted in several accidental shootings, another gun-advocating event has been marred by gun violence. On Saturday, it was reported that a man died from gun shot wounds suffered at NASCAR's NRA 500 race at Texas Motor Speedway. Late Sunday afternoon, medical investigators ruled the shooting a "self-inflicted injury," saying the man shot himself in his head.
Fort Worth police said the incident occurred shortly after the man, 42-year-old Kirk Franklin of Saginaw, Texas, engaged in an argument with other campers at the event. There were several witnesses to the incident, but no other injuries were reported. Police also said that alcohol may have been a factor.

5860...The Next PM

Presuming that the next PM is the new leader of the Liberal Party, Justin Trudeau, let us hope that he does a 180.

There was a time that Canada was a democracy.  There was a time that government was there to serve the people

In this country we embrace the myth that we are still a democracy when we know that we are not a democracy, that we are not free, that the government does not serve us but subjugates us. Although we give lip service to the notion of freedom, we know the government is no longer the servant of the people but, at last has become the people’s master. We have stood by like timid sheep while the wolf killed, first the weak, then the strays, then those on the outer edges of the flock, until at last the entire flock belonged to the wolf. We did not care about the weak or about the strays. They were not a part of the flock. We did not care about those on the outer edges. They had chosen to be there. But as the wolf worked its way towards the center of the flock we discovered that we were now on the outer edges. Now we must look the wolf squarely in the eye. That we did not do so when the first of us was ripped and torn and eaten was the first wrong. It was our wrong.

That comes from the mind of Gerry Spence, the Wyoming based trial lawyer, talking about his own country. He may as well be talking about Canada too.

5854...Street Food Hits Montreal

Montreal, one of the greatest cities in the world for food, hasn't had street food for 65 years.

That's what I learned from a Globe and Mail I found on the bus earlier this week.  I have only visited Montreal about 824 times and have lived there a bit and never noticed the lack thereof.  This illustrates how observant I are not.

"Trucks will be limited to 10 sites downtown on a trial basis beginning June 10. Candidates will be selected by a city committee, must be offshoots of existing caterers or restaurants, and do most of their food preparation off-site."

The limited amount of permits, 10, means intense competition for said permits and that, in true Montreal style, means envelopes full of cash.

Mayor Applebaum has caught on fast, eh?

5849...Stephen Harper Calls It As It Is

Back home in Calgary to do a little constit work out beloved Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, took a min out of his busy schedule to comment about the Rehtaeh Parsons case.

In case you missed the story let me and The Canadian Press refresh your brain cells.  "The Nova Scotia girl's family says she hanged herself last week after she was sexually assaulted by four boys and a photo of the alleged incident was distributed online."

It is a case of bullying.  Except, and I am with him on this, PM Harper says it is much more.  Our beloved PM says that "...bullying has the connotation of kids misbehaving, but what has been described in this case is criminal activity."

True dat.

5847...Ontario Leads The Way

CFRA reports that Ontario is number one!

A new report from the Fraser Institute finds that Ontario's electricity is the most expensive in North America because of the Green Energy Act.  Lead author Dr. Ross McKitrick tells CFRA the conservative think-tank studied the costs of expanding to renewable energy.   "The drain on the public budget, the effect on manufacturing operating costs — just on those bases there, just on the hard cost numbers, we're looking at diminished manufacturing activity and much higher electricity prices in the province," he says.  Dr. McKitrick adds the Green Energy Act is costing $200-million a year and argues that less expensive alternatives could have achieved similar greenhouse gas emissions reductions.  The report did not study the long-term sustainability of energy sources.
The key sentence in the story of course is "The report did not study the long-term sustainability of energy sources."

One thing about the McGuinty cum Wynne government is that they, unlike, for example, Stephen Harper, project into the future and understand that Ontario needs to have options and different channels of energy sources.
